I got a contact in Austria, who is going to make me a tank at a VERY good price. 580 euro! Money are tight at the moment, so I don't know when exactly I will order it. Could also go with a fiber tank at half the price, but then I'd have the worry of E85 petrol etc.
It has come to my attention that people think the Bimota tail looks weird. Any of you know a tail that might be suitable for this tail? Preferrebly it will be prepared for plate and rearlight!
I think the proportions look pretty good on this: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BSOB5Wovd...AHHk/Qmfrn_8k7Wg/s640/yamaha_rd350_custom.jpg
I see what you mean, although I'm going with the huge metal tank, and would like something semi-off the shelf. Looking at this atm.
Obviously this is a very personal decision, and ultimately you are the only one who needs to be happy with it so please take the following with a grain of salt as it's just my opinion...but the long flat tank doesn't really work with the bulbous tail light and curves of that Laverda piece. The tank has Ducati Imola look to it so what about a seat that carries those lines to the back and then echos the curve of tank as it drops to the seat?
You know, that doesn't look bad at all. The cut at the back matches the tank well so if you got the scale right then I think you might have something.
The only thing I could jugde it by was the size of the shockabsorber, but the the shock absorber will ofcourse not sit just alike on both bikes.
Just recieved a call from the machinist. One of the cylinders needed a +2.0mm piston, so the boring can't be done today as planned. However he had a set of cylinders, that needed 1.5mm pistons, so I got those for free and ordered a set of 1.5mm pistons. Luckily I can return the +1.00mm pistons... I just need to send them back to Japan :/
Also, today wheels have been ordered. Its a GPZ305 pair, that will be machined to fit the RD, bolt on! EDIT: The picture is only for wheel reference! "Originals":
Nice. BTW, curious if you wouldn't mind sharing the cost of machining the cylinders? I have an RD 250 I just picked up as a present for my son and it's being checked out now. It only has 6K original miles but I it still may need a fresh re-bore and pistons. Of course if you prefer not to get into costs I completely understand.
150 USD, but this is Denmark, we have some of the highest wages in the world. I doubt it will be comparable :)
Yeah they were belt driven, this is a conversion done by some RD350 racers in Germany, and they run sprockets. Everything should fit with no mods to the original Yamaha parts. So far I am 90 euro out on the wheels, which is quite cheap!
There has been alot going on this last month. On the 13th.of November, my mother died after fighting abdominal cancer for two years. This has also meant that I've chosen to move job (I'm in the military, so I changed base). So time and money has gone to finding a new apartment and saving up for a deposit, as I got next to nothing from the old place. I'm still trying to keep momentum and focusing on the good stuff, but it's not much that I'm getting done. What I did do though, is paint my cylinders and heads. To my surprise, this heat resistant paint is VERY durable, very easy to use and the matt finish is awesome. I will try to use this on frames in the future, that is for sure. The picture is not the best and I haven't polished the fins yet, only started removing the paint. It's not the best picture, but hey. I'm on christmas break, so I am in no hurry to get stuff done, which I thinks helps me paint this. Just a little layer per day, then off to do other errands.
Hi Lasse.. I've been watching this thread since you started it and I'm loving what you are doing with the RD, I have a little idea of giving new life to one, but the LC model instead of the aircooled... But we'll see.. I do feel so sorry about your mother, and I understand that you can have problems with moving to a new place.. The important thing is that you are still on the project, maybe not as fast as in the first time, but you are progressing. I'll wait for you to show some progress! Just in case.. Merry christmas!
So sorry for your loss. Keep at though, it's a good thing to focus your energy on and it's coming along great. BTW, have you decided on whether you're keeping the oil injector or going with pre-mix? Not sure what is considered the safest/best option.
Sorry about the loss of your Mom. Now about the bike I sure hope you just stick with the oil injection system, which is proven and worked fro 40 years on Yamahas and other bikes. If it aint broke don't fix it this will save your ass
