I just realized that the Indianapolis 500 is coming up. That used to be a big deal. Does anyone even give a shit anymore?

    Owner/driver on the pole. :clap

    Old faces, new faces.

Pole day was good, bump day was about average, carb day and race day soon. Lotsa fast rookies, returning 500 champs, second/third generation drivers and girls in the field, should be a good race.

I don't; but keep in mind that the 500 draws about 300,000 attendees each year, which is probably more people than spectate at every professional motorcycle road race combined in the US each year. Though maybe not this year because we'll have 3 moto GP races.

That's quite remarkable (and sad) when you think about it.

I'm interested this year, but haven't been in a long time. For me the peak was late 1980s. I've been to Indy MotoGP a couple times and found the facility impressive. I sure would like to see the cars hitting 240 down those long chutes. The sound must be something other worldly.

One of my closest friends father won that race. I used to follow it closely until I learnt that car racing has no soul. I've got a signed lithograph of Jacques Villenueve from 1995 and a full can of MGD with Bobby Rahal on it from 1992 when I went to that damn race. Sat in the box suite outside of turn 2 with Debbie Gibson next door. Eat your damn hearts out roundy round boys!

Love open wheel at Indy. It's a special event at a special track.

I still don't like the new cars. That bodywork around the rear wheels makes them look funky.

We have an IndyCar thread, for anyone who's interested in commenting on the series. The race in Brazil two weeks ago had a spectacular finish.

I remember that race against Al Unser with Al Jr getting in the way as a lapper. Sneva seemed to have a lot of great battles. Wasn't he leading near the end when his CV joint failed? He was a fun guy to watch. Seemed like he was in a new car every season too. I always thought of him as sort of mercenary in that way. The hired gun.

The only thing that will save Indy is if they somehow manage to get it on the Formula 1 schedule. That may save the 500, the series is toast! They have never recovered from the split and even another DP won't save it.
The cars are stupid looking, at least a LP is a good looking car. I would also say that half the Lemans and SCCA drivers are better than any of the Indy guys.
