Hey I have a friend who wants to sell me a Motorola A855 Droid. It's using Android 2.2.3 and has SD card. Is this a reasonable choice to run the app? Anyone using one?

I will not be using it for anything else and I want something used and cheap since I may well drop it in a river or vibrate it to death.

it has a slide out keyboard. I'm hinking this may be a problem while bike mounted. have to try it I guess

Maybe not, if you can also get an onscreen keyboard to work. I had an HTC Tilt that had both and used it for DSM.

I ordered a nexus 7 today. I'll have that Speedo problem sorted out soon.

Crafty, as you know I had problems with my HTC Sensation (unreadable screen in sunlight, serious power issues) and gave up running the app as my main device, so I bought a Garmin Montana. That was 2 years ago and I haven't been completely pleased with it. Next week the new Garmin Monterra hits the stores and it seems to be a Montana, but with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HD Video, FM & Weather Radio, AND IT USES THE ANDROID OS. Plus the standard unit is waterproof (IPX-7), shockproof, has 16 hrs battery life and will run on 3 AA's, and fits my Montana mounts.

The downside is the price - $650 - and the "low" res touch screen. It's only 272 x 480 pixels.

Garmin claim you can run Google Play Apps on it, but doesn't state if they must be written specifically for a low res screen.

Would DSM run at this resolution? I ask, because I'm considering selling the Montana and getting a Monterra if they have any good Black Friday sales.

I will do what I can to make the app work on it when it arrives. I think a hardened android device is a great idea in theory. I'd like t see what garmin came up with in practice though. The screen sure does sound low res which is concerning. We shall see. Thanks for the offer!

What settings do I change to make the tracks pick up more points? When tracking offroad I loose some of the details on the trail.

BTW, I've just sold my Montana of the Flea Market so I'm ready to buy the Monterra when it's released any day now (hopefully, but Garmin haven't been great at meeting schedules)

EDIT 11 Nov 2013: I just cancelled my Montana sale and crossed the Monterra off my list. I didn't realize it had a smartphone-like screen and is not glove friendly. This shouldn't affect your customer base who all have smart phones and must hence accept this limitation. I can't. It makes me understand why you developed the remote control thingy .

I got the Nexus 7 in the mail and was able to fix the speedometer. I'm doing a little testing now to confirm the fix is backwards compatible and then I'll release it.

I've pushed the updated version of the app to Google Play. I've not seen any issues on my older phone so I think its probably fine. Please let me know if you have any issues.
