Ya'll are lookin at the BIG Strom in the wrong context..... It's a BIG streety ADV bike.... Ala Tiger Explorer... or 800 Roadie... F700GS... Versys.

Not an 800XC 800GS....etc. Mabe Suzy will leave it to the 650 (after a more complete redesign) to be the dirtier of the two Stroms.

I am entertaining the idea of moving to the Austin area and have been looking for areas to offroad out there. Im currently in Milton FL (just outside of Pensacola) and have Blackwater River State Park not too far from me which makes finding beautiful places to offroad pretty easy. This is not even including Eglin AFB which is HUGE, but prolly some of the nastiest sand you can find too :puke1

I have checked the google maps "100 miles from Austin" (or whatever its called) but it is hard to ascertain where a concentration of offroad is that is more than just a dirt road. I like two-track, single track, and dirt roads (running a DR650). In the PAR thread (Pensacola Area Riders- Sandbox subforum), one of the locals updated his post on the first page to include info on where riders can get their offroad fix (Blackwater and Eglin AFB), so perhaps an idea for this thread? Maybe places you guys commonly meet up?

Anyways, other then west of Fredricksburg which seems to have a high concentration of stuff, any suggestions?

lol. Well, one thing we don't have is public single track. Sorry, Florida. Other than Sam Houston not really any trail systems you can hit and get back in a day. Dirt roads? Well, yeah. We got tons of those. Just get outta the city. Plenty of private riding parks, too.

Generally speaking, Texas is privately owned so there is very little single track that can be ridden legally. However, there are a few public lands with OHV access: Bridgeport, Barnwell, Sam Houston, etc. The last, SHNF, is reasonably close to Austin and has a lot of good single track. All others would require hours of driving.

There are also privately owned parks. Most of my dirt bike buddies from Austin have memberships to Hidden Falls in Marble Falls. There's a ton of good stuff there but get ready for rocks. There are other great private properties to ride but they also require considerable travel time: CTOR, Red River, Gilmer,...

If you _really_ enjoy single track then often your best bet is a local race club. They get to ride a lot of properties that the general public never sees.

Thanks for all the info (all of you). Running a DR, I am limited on nasty knarly single track, but I do enjoy failing :lol3. I will look into the areas you mentioned. Texas is much closer to Colorado than Florida too :evil
