Hey guys, I'm new on board! I'm interested in buying a Yamaha DT125e. I just found this forum on google searching for pics. This here is what I found and fell in love: Anybody got more info about that bike? What is it? 250? 175? My question is, is the DT125e "the same" bike like the bigger DT175 - "just" a smaller engine? or the frame is also smaller? Thanks, -Kev
Lots of parts interchange between the 125's and 175's, but generally of the same or similar years. Best bet? Find the part number of the part you want and crossreference it with other years (boats.net is a good resource. At least I think it's boats.net) The DT's went to monoshock in 78, and to square section swingarms not long after. That bike is an earlier one for sure, but I don't know much else from just that one picture heh.
the twin shock dt125 and dt175 are close, aside from: cylinder, head, piston, rings, airbox, exhaust. also the dt125 had a totally different ignition....dt125 had that gigantic starter/generator setup....there might be a frame change for the exhaust mounting.. it doesn't really matter - my guess is the bike you have pictured is a ct2 or ct3..and not a dt.. .
The tires ans wheels and brakes interchange, at least for the 78. Same with the exhaust and airbox, actually. But again, have to check your specific year.
DT125E is '78. 125 and 175 are identical other than bore and color. I'm pretty sure the gold bike is a '73 175.
An electric start 125 is kind of silly. You could start those with your arm. My 490 was a whole other story.
I found the monoshock DT125 and DT175 to have entirely different characters out on the trail. The 125 is a rev happy little riot of a bike to ride that ran cleanly all the time. But I never rode a 175 that felt like it was jetted right. They seemed to sign off early and not rev out like the 125. My memories of how the 175's ran from back in the day were confirmed when I rode a time capsule 1980 DT175 last year. I don't know if it is the port timing, jetting, pipe or what. I wish I had had a 125 to ride back to back with it. But back in the day I liked the DT125 motor way better. Which still strikes me as weird that the DT175's were like that because the IT175's were a blast. And I did ride several DT175's back in the day that all ran the same way. So it wasn't a single machine issue. I had the choice of a new DT175 or new XT200 and went for the XT because of how the 175's ran. Or maybe my brains have just turned to mush at my advanced age and I have it all screwed up.
I have an RT180 and I thought it was the bike itself too, didnt rev out, would sputter and pop when cold and just never seemed crisp.I don't know if it needs a rebuild but the thing smokes like a chimney,I don't know if theres a way to limit the autolube or not?
this is a 1981 model DT175 i sold not long ago....... it had similar tuning to what you state however on one trail ride the muffler fell off....and what do you know it rev'ed out then the standard mufflers very restrictive another muffle experience i had with DT400's mine had a stock standard muffler a mate with the same year DT400 had a snapped in half standard muffler.....both bikes felt very different as for the 125 vs 175 here its half the price to register a 125cc or less bike so that's a 125 win for me
I had a DT250E back in the day and the stock muffler was terribly restrictive. I swear it felt like twice the engine power with the muffler off and as above, it'd rev out nicely. I changed over to a Supertrap and life was good. Then I traded it for an IT425...
thanks everybody for your input. I just scored a 1977 DT 125e on ebay. Can't wait to get it here. Looking on the pics, do the 125cc versions and 175cc have the same wheelbase measurements like the DT 360 twinshock (the RT/CT ones)? I mean are the proportions the same? I know the 125cc got smaller tires.. is it also possible to wrap some 4.00-18 on rear and 3.25-19 tires on front of the 125cc?
DT 175 Classic. I love mine, only ride her off road, Some day I will gather up all her parts ( she is naked now) a new coat of factory silver paint, re-chrome a full restore ... Not yet though even her stinger is off, very loud fun., So so so simple. A tinkers &/ riders dream Good luck with yours.
My first bike was a 1978 DT175E.....bought it brand new with the money I had worked all summer .....$800 the motor really woke up into a torque monster when I modded the airbox and piston........thats when I found out about jetting when I seized a few pistons...but that little carb on it had a funky 1 size only pilot jet so I had to get creative with drilling out the hole to a larger size I sold it to get my car fixed ...........I miss that bike
Thats my first bike! Mine was a dark maroon color though. Used to have to work on it all the time but I never cared. Talk about awesome memories.
The twinshock models should be very identical just cylinder and piston too some jets and the rear muffler, at least in my experience with Euro models. I have a TY 125 which I recently converts to a 175 + 25cc. The 125 was the better selling bike in Europe as it was still a light motorcycle as mentioned cheaper to insure and too in many countries already be used by young riders with age of 16. The 175cc models where already real motorcycles which you could first ride with 18 and a motorcycle driving license. Anyway both work great the 125 needs more throttle the 175 had more grunt buy was a bit asthmatic due to the intake set which in personal view was more designed towards the smaller model. Thumps pressed for your ride!!!
