Hey maybe there is more offroad than I know about here.. I know as a total GS noob and offroad less than noob, I have not ventured onto the dirt much. Other factor to remember is the speed limits around here.. the highest limit on the entire island is 60mph, and is for about a 2 mile stretch on the H-3. Other freeways 55 and most roads that would be 45-55 on the mainland are 30-40 around here.
There are only a few truly organized off-road races over here and they're generally run in a Hare and Hound format. Labor Day has the Hardcore on Kauai: &ampnbsp &ampnbsp Around Thanksgiving there's the Turkey Trot on Oahu: And here we have the Mauna Kea 200 on Memorial Day This years event will be both Saturday and Sunday for street legal bikes. Unlicensed bikes and ATVs will run just Sunday. Saturday will be 100-120 miles in Kulani forest. Sunday will be around the mountain. Long day Saturday, quick ride on Sunday. The start Saturday will be at the parking area at the Upper Waiakea ATV/Dirt Bike Park on Stainback Highway, finish will be along Saddle Road, same place as last year. Sunday will start and finish at Mauna Kea State Park. So who's in? I'm probably going to shoot video and fotos since I'm not going to be 100% by then. Last year folks came from the East and the West coasts.
AH, just found this thread ! Sorry not to find it sooner, I live on Oahu out in the country near Hauula in the thriving metropolis of Kaaawa ! ( a complete town; 1 gas station, 1 bab-b-que joint, 1 bar and a post office, no traffic signals ) If anyone else is heading htis way, get in touch - I'll get you out sailing at the least. Sorry I won't be around for the memorial day ride though, headed to the East Coast.
When my wife and I were going to school in Laie my basketball team (ward ball if you know the culture there) called themselves Hauula Tech. I had a "Hauula Tech" t-shirt for a while but lost it long ago.
Yes sir once again I'm on the wrong island! Hi southeast thumper Well I found out I can fly over dirt cheap and was thinking of coming over for Memorial Day weekend, but most stuff is booked. Thinking of taking my sleeping bag and renting a cage just sleep in the back seat or Have small tent too. This sounds like a fun event to observe. So, I am checking into shipping my bike over and I guess Matson is the only interisland carrier. OR I was thinking if I come over for Memorial weekend to see about a cheap reliable M/C that I could leave so I could come over more easily Do you know of any DS's for sale that are affordable?
We should have an Oahu ADV mini-rally ! - just not this weekend, Im racing (sailboats, not bikes). Also if any of you guys from the neighbor islands find yourselves over here and want to do some moto-exploring on the cheap, I keep a Wee-Strom handy for visitors. I had the good fortune to go to Maui several times on the Superferry with the DL650 - that was a great gig, too bad it didn't last.
I keep a SOnoma30 at the Waikiki Yacht Club and an Impulse21 at La Mariana, I race on both sides though - usually Melges 24s over in Kaneohe, this weekend it's big boats ( a Sydney36) in town. So far in April I've sailed 15 days - about average for me.
I watched after I posted the MK200 info that some 400 views were made yet nobody said "Shootz brah, I stay coming ova for race!" Lived on Oahu as a youngster, gotta say if you're going to live on Oahu Kaaawa is one of few places worth doing it at! Sam, you can for sure stay at Mauna Kea State Park Saturday night with the race crew and I can probably find you some accomodations in Hilo Friday night (I gotta let the wife simmer down from last night's too late and too drunk return from a friend's house before I ask her about our place, though I guarentee you can stay at my mom's place). I still haven't gotten the nod to ride from the Doc yet so I may be pounding around in my Jeep to do video and fotos. Just came back from a race meeting and they are hurting for course workers, you usually get a T-shirt, lunch, and abuse from the riders so if anybody is willing to help out let me know and we'll put you to work!
Hope this isn't cuz I have no affiliation (not even on the same island) but this is a fairly common Hawaii thread topic/question. Recommend you bring your own gear!!!
Well if you ask me it's probably SPAM cause that road is in to good of shape to be Oahu; look close, no pot holes or patch jobs not to mention the lack of road bumpers Bad news from RC looks like the Marines scheduled my facility on Memoral Day (who the hell work on holidays.. um Marines) so I may not make the event.
This would be very cool, thinking about getting something small when I move over to the Big island later this summer. Either small sailer, or Zodiac with a 50-100hp. Im torn betwen the two. Id love the serenity of sailing, but also would love a quick trip out to the FADs (fish aggregation device) with the spearguns! Do you ever sail over to the big island? Thumper, thanks for posting the info about the MK 200. Wish I could make it over for it this year, Ill have to enter it next year for sure. Some vids I took from my quick trip over to help my buddy move in. Should have brought the snowboards!!! Wish I had my bike with me the OHV area looks very cool below the observatories. We just drove up in the Jeep and back down failry quick, it was 40 degrees with a strong wind. Just found this thread and I am glad to see some Hawaii activity. We have a place in Volcano Village, but I spend most time in NY (so far). Wife goes back and forth and so do I. No bike in Hawaii yet, but I am looking. My goal is to do the Saddle road. Doesn't sound like much of a goal but I just got my license last fall so I am a new rider. So who handles shipping bikes inter-island? I found an R80ST for sale on Maui last year, but I couldn't figure how to get it to the Big Island. There are not many bikes available near Volcano.
Thw only venor I found that will do inter-island vehicle tranport is "Young Brothers" and I was told I have to have the bike palletized when it arrives on the dock (have your own pallet) or you can rent a container but there is a waiting list and $$$ so I was told by them. Matson and Pasha only do hawaii-mainland and back. Pasha charges $525 for a San diego to hawaii for a KLR goes by weight. I am already entertaining the idea of purchishing on the big island and leaving it there, but have no place to leave the bike secured.
Downer, sounds like the work of 1st Bn, 3rd Marines.... Gotta feel for those fellahs, I think this is their third trip since I started working back on the Big Isle. IMHO go with the Zoddy, you can launch at Honaunau, Road to the Sea, Milolii, Mahu Kona, Manuka, etc. etc. etc. where your 10 minutes troll away from some excellent dive spots. Pallet shipping cost $70.00 last year this time. You can get free pallets in Hilo at the Harley Joint but it's worth beefing them up with pop-rivets before you use them. "G-Van" container was about $120.00 two years back, you can get two bikes in plus all your gear and stash.
The shipper in Maui told me about G-vans, but I couldn't understand what they were talking about. I thought it was a GM van (vehicle)! So suppose I bought a bike on Maui. Would I ride it down to the dock and try to find a pallet at the Harley place and then have it shipped to Hilo? Your pictures are worth a thousand emails.
That would work, I usually go the G-van route when I'm selling a bike and am splitting costs with the new guy cause there's always the chance the bike will be sitting in Salt Spray on the barge and stew at the docks for a while before it's picked up. If it's mine I make sure I pick it up right away and give it a good bath. Since there's no direct service between Hilo and Maui Young Brothers charges you close double when go that route or Hilo to Kauai since everything gets cross loaded in Honolulu. Why not buy a bike on the Big Island and when you get tired of riding here ship it elsewhere? There's a hell of a lot more riding here so it'll be a bit before you burn out, a serious trailbike (KTM, Husky, CRF-X. WR-F) with a plate will keep you entertained for years over here.
Yup that is what I am thinking just buy something over there fly over cheap ride around fly back... but I need to stash the bike someplace when away. Craigslist Yes you are correct 1/3 at it. Well I can float my holiday to another weekend just going to miss the big event.
Im leaning that way, portability around the island is a plus with the inflatable. However a cuddy cabin sailer would benefit me if I become homeless. I will have my 4x van if it comes to that though.
