My FIL has one that's in mint condition. Bad part about the 83-84 models was poor top end oiling that caused the cams to wipe out. FIL fitted his with an upgrade to get more oil to the top and hasn't had any issues. His bike has about 30k miles.

I completely forgot about the top end oiling issue those 1st-Gen 'Ceptors had. IIRC, ya had to shell out the money for the upgrade yerself, I don't believe Honda did a recall. They must not have had to replace too many cams under warranty.

I remember the first time I laid eyes on a V45 Interceptor back in '83; I had never seen anything like it. Lust at first sight.

They also had some cam chain issues with tensioners and guides going south at bad times (see: acceleration). Hence gear driven cams for next gen.

And here all this time I thought they went over to gear driven cams for that cool gear whine sound they made...

i thought magna sabre chain drive and all intercepters gear drive. I'm sure i'm wrong tho'.

My memory is faulty, but I thought the 1st-Gen 'ceptors all had chain-driven cams. So I checked out Cycle World's informative and entertaining "Honda VFR History" web article. Turns out the '84 VF1000R was the first of the VF series to get gear-driven cams. Didn't realize they got gear-drive that early, I thought it was around '86...

The only 'ceptor I've ever ridden was a 700, and it was fun. I've always wanted to ride a 500 though, just to see what all the hype was about back in the mid-80's. That little bike was supposed to be a real sweetheart in the twisties.
