I have used ProPilot for years and they have always done a fantastic job. Completely transformed my 1150 GS and my F650 Dakar.

Quick question: my wife complains about the harsh ride on her 2013 R1200R and it seems (!) that the degraded comfort is mainly on the too harsh front end which might also be slightly wrong for her weight.

What would you recommend for the R given these rider specs:

    - 58kg rider weight before any gear, probably about 10kg of gear including helmet
    - mainly used for touring (medium distance, 200 to 500 miles per day)
    - riding is often with side cases, estimate is about 50% of all miles covered are with side cases and other luggage
    - no passenger, ever

    Thanks!

    Hi Cug-

Super -cool bike (Non ESA Version I Presume?)

I'll PM you some more "Rider Sag" Base Measurements to take as a "Field-Check"

UPDATE ALERT WE DO HAVE 2011-2013 BMW R 1200R OHLINS!!!!!

The Previous years we used Front Sprgs of 57n/m and 190n/m rear Standard,

That way to Stiff springs for thw Wife at 128lbs and 22 lbs gear

Front and Rear "rider Sag" Should be checked at between 30-40mm ,

I'll PM if you Dont know how

    Thanks!

    Excellent, we'll check these.

And no, the bike does not have ESA.

What we had measured as rider sag was with my wife on the bike the front did around 35mm and the rear around 40mm (if I recall correctly, we did a setup when she first got it). The pre-load is nearly completely backed out at the rear, no adjustment at the front. I also softened the rear rebound half a turn from standard.

She still feels like being bumped around a lot.

Ah, darn. I feared that as the bikes are normally set up for a ~75kg person.

Okay. That leaves me now wondering what can be done for her. I guess a suspension shop could re-spring the shocks. Or is Öhlins planning on anything for the 2011+ R1200R models?

Jim, here are some updated numbers, we measured this today:

    A) Front, unloaded (wheel can spin): 0mm (reference point)
    B) Front, with bike only: 36mm sag
    C) Front, with bike + rider: 45mm sag

At the front, when she gets on the bike it only sags 9mm more than with just bike weight.

    D) Rear, unloaded (wheel can spin): 0mm (reference point)
    E) Rear, with bike only: 16mm
    F) Rear, with bike + rider: 32mm

To me it looks like the spring rates are off. Especially at the front. My wife didn't have her helmet on, but was otherwise in full gear.

According to BMW the bike has 120mm front suspension travel and 140mm at the rear. The absolute percentages in rider sag look okay (could maybe be a bit more at the rear), but the difference between bike and bike+rider is what surprises me a bit.

What do you think? Still think 20% softer spring will do the trick (with proper preload)?

    Yes!

Even more than 20% is required almost 25% to get much closer

    -No problem
