For harder off road work the Tenere would be more friendly. The Transalp is certainly a lot smoother as far as the engine goes which makes the highway use easier to get along with. Mpg comparisons between the Honda and Yamaha is also in the Hondas favour, but it also only carries 19 litres of fuel. Gearing is up from standard to 47 on the rear which makes it very good off road. Last fuel fill showed 220 klms for 13.4 litres of fuel on highway, dirt and single track to Kilcoy, Bellthorpe and Jimna areas. How does that compare with your bike? The biggest difference I see is the seat height and ground clearance of the two bikes. Off road I have taken the Transalp through all the tracks and single track I rode on my XChallenge and 390 Berg, just a bit slower. On the dirt roads and twin track it is as fast or faster. Only mods are Emulators and springs in the forks, Pivot Pegz and an Arrow exhaust, all of which make significant improvements. Air filter and battery are easy to service and rear frame is strong enough to carry heavy loads with no problems. Hardest thing is finding a good one of either bike to buy. There is one of your model down here in all white with the red checker Yamaha stickers which looks very good.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone is able to help me. I am after the Right side front cowling for a Tenere manufactured 12/95. It is the blue one with yellow graphics. Or if someone may be able to point me in the right direction as to where I may be able to purchase one fron or a wreckers that specialises in Tenere's. Thanks Left One
The Japanese bike wreckers in SA recently had a similar vintage tenere. Might be worth trying them. I can add phone number if your not sure
Well since this post I bought an available Transalp and been having fun..... but the whole Tenere thing was niggling inside, especially after a mate bought a 92 model. It wasnt any slower on the roads than the Transalp and far better off road. So one came up, and I now have a97 twin headlamp model Would I be correct in thinking its a 3YF 4MY model ??? Also I looked for a new front sprocket and found a spares site here in UK who had it down as £87 !!!!!!! Why so much for OE when I can get a sunstar for £20. Is there a need to run original sprockets, like I do on Hondas because of output shaft wear caused by poor quality aftermarket stuff ??? Anyhows I guess running them side by side will give me all the answers I need to which one I prefer hey
I'm sure there will be shops in uk with cheaper sprocket than that. Try search for site called offtheroad. With a bit of work the ten can be much better of road than it is standard. I've done heaps to mine but I like fiddling with it Not quite sure re codes. Most likely 3yf. You will find they are pretty much the same from 91 to 99
Cheers 3YF is on the plate on the frame but I keep seeing 4MY on internet??? So is there a problem with aftermarket sprockets or should I look at OE And what been done to yours to make it better ??
I'm sure I only use aftermarket. I'm no expert but my under standing is that the good quality steel to last. Meaning avoid cheap sprockets but I doubt it will be as dear as what your talking. Best to start withy bike is over at tenere.co.uk http://www.tenere.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=824 I also have some stuff in this thread and the Aussie tenere thread. Both threads are a long but good read. Lots of different ideas and fixs to diff problems. A site specific google search is also very useful
My XT660Z post adjusted paint scheme...............some of you may have seen this before in a different colour/country!?
