There's a little place in Queanbeyan, off Yass Rd., Endurance Avenue? service station on the corner?, about two hundred metres on the right up there.
run by a Tongan/Fijian family, lovely people,
good prices; - cost me $280 for a frame / swingarm / triple trees / battery box / engine mounts - all XS650 stuff
that's sandblasted / rustproofed / powdercoating - about five years ago, so maybe a bit dearer now, isn't everything?, they gave quotes too!!! :huh

You missed out on a good training ride after we split up @ Binda, centre-punched a really shitful thunderstorm heading down through Lost River - Wheo - Biala, just kept moving - too lightning coming down to stop :eek1

Anyone think that the safari tank is a bad idea generally?

Tossing up whether to get one on me KLR...

Carrying and transferring extra fuel is a pain.

You can never have too much range, not everyone realises that you don't always have to fill them either, so weight is arguably only an issue when you need the range. And if the ergos are OK.

there's an argument for the clear one right there, even if it doesn't look as "cool" as the black one....

when you mean ergos, do you mean how it affects handling or something else? I know that on the KLR the safari tank fills in the spaces taken up by the plastics so doesn't change the way it looks too much.

ergos, AKA erogonomics, or how it feels to sit and stand with between the legs. Bigger tanks are often wider and taller, and can upset those of smaller stature in particular, or those more well endowed.

I like the clear one, I can just look down and know how many kms left before fuel needed, its very convenient.

cool. Yeah well like I said the KLR safari tank makes no difference to the ergonomics, so it comes down to how it affects the handling as well.

That and the fact that the standard tank is 22L, while the safari is only 10L bigger at 32L... $650 for that makes me wonder....

It effects the handling, but a lot less in the tank than strapped on somewhere in a jerrycan or bladder, and has no effect if you don't put the extra 10 l in it. Defo a $lot for 10 l though. Mind you it probably takes more. My supposed 30, or 32 l Safari on my DR takes over 37 l, which is definitely a handy 700 km range.

Fuel range is definately a must - hence looking at all options as far as the XS's are concerned, more experimentation of jets & general fine-tuning to happen yet

Front tank is the early Guzzi [Eldorado/Ambassador], gives 22.5lts :huh

tank on frame is off a later model CB750 [F series?], could end up being used - cut & tuck - to make a monster ADV [ugly] tank :eek1

I haven't done this road for probably a decade and was wondering what it was like now. Has much of it been sealed? Are the dirt bits loose or corrugated?

I am considering taking a rather large roadie(cruiser) across there in a couple of weeks and would appreciate the thoughts of any who have been across it recently.
