Hi all, last Wednesday I got my new Ride for the coming months and its a Honda NC700XA! Having done just over a 100mls commuting since than I decided today I would run her in properly. my starting mileage was: and the tank was still more than half full. First I went around Berkshire towards West Berks and than headed to Basingstoke, Hampshire. The roads were pretty wet still and greasy, but the NC is very planted and with ABS on-board I can brake whenever, wherever... soon I found myself on even smaller road, with no traffic and the little NC purred along nicely. Hampshire is very pretty and picturesque and with some many old churches and house I stopped a view times to took photos...here is a nice one I than tried a couple of "green" lanes or better mud lanes to see what the NC is like on the rougher stuff and it coped well. Tyres are an obvious limitation compare to the knobblies on my XR400 but I had trouble and the ABS and smooth power delivery made it easy to ride through. Bike got nice and filthy too. I thank stopped for quick cuppa and also chatted to a fellow rider on his 12er BMW GSA - he could not believe that I took the 4 days old machine off-road for a bit! but well there is a first for everything.... i guess the bike looked pretty dirty at that stage this was the only bit of blue sky I had all day, but I did not mind I also tried a bit of the faster roads and the bike is also fully at home at higher speeds.. the fuel gauge started showing reserve at 176 miles and I push on as I wanted to get to 200+. luckely these bikes are so fuel efficient that I made the 200 mark with no problems at all the Bike took 12.11 liters which give me 75mpg (UK) = 3.75l/100km = very good considering its been off-road, high speed etc. there you have it - first Tank successfully emptied and replenished. I rode another 60mls before getting home after almost doing 170 miles - I took one last picture before heading home. The bike ran perfect all day ( I did not expect anything else...). I was comfy, light, handled very well, sure footed and economical. I found myself cruising mainly in 5th or 6th gear on the lanes at speeds between 50-70mph. Overtakes are easy. my SLR camera together with my rucksack fitted nicely in the luggage space - very clever that! Anyway, that it for now. Thanks and Greetings to all from the UK Lars
This week on monday i filled the second empty tank and again i cover 189 miles and refuelled 11.53 liters which is about 74mpg....for the last 2 days i have been using the car though as its too cold...
Lars1974, Nice touch but know exactly how you feel I took a brand new V-strom green laning with about the same mileage, these questions need to be asked and answered
Nice bike mate looks like you had fun, I'm from basingstoke if you ever fancy a ride out don't see many bikes out this time of year. Keep up the dirty work. Luke.
Would love to get your opinion on this bike, how does it do on highways crusing at 70plus? How did it handle off road i see the tires look like full street tires. Honda made this to be entry to the adv riding u think this is a good start? Any shortcomings on the bike?
Hello, let me try and answer some of these questions: how does it do on highways crusing at 70plus? - with ease. 70mph is no problem at all - I had it up to 100mph...but about 85 it gets a bit slower in acceleration and you need to be in 5th to get up to speed as sixth gear is very tall... How did it handle off road i see the tires look like full street tires - tires are the main weak point. front suspension is very good... rear - pretty basic. Brakes are good and ABS is not too harsh in cutting in... I was fine on the muddy lanes, but it not for a MX track etc...but handles a fire road with ease. a bit like my Buell Ulyssess! the low revving engine helps too. Honda made this to be entry to the adv riding u think this is a good start? I think its a great starting point into adventure riding. at real road speed the bike is perfect and with the 200 mile range from a 14 liter tank its made for touring! Comfort is fine. Any shortcomings on the bike? - the screen is pretty useless..as its not blocking much wind. I would have liked heated grips too (but these are available as an option) other than that - try one... Thanks Lars
Yes, I would agree with this if you ride on dirty roads etc...as otherwise the radiator will take it all...
another update: I am now on my fourth Tank and the bike has had its first service (600mls). I am still very happy with it and use it now daily again... storage space is very useful and it served me well during xmas shopping and my daily gym run. the bike has not yet had a wash hence its still filthy from my little off-road excursion! see pic below total mileage is now 691. average consumption over the last 3 tanks = 74.4mpg. last tank i filled up after 207miles and it took 12.7litres. Now that the roads are getting drier I can actually use the bikes light weight and cornering ability a bit more...its fun! Thanks Lars
Update: I filled up the 4th tank yesterday after 207mls and it took just over 13litres. So gave me just over 71mpg! I havent used the bike much during the cold and wet weather. I have a shiny new CRV for that! Anyway but now that spring will hopefully come soon the mileage on the CRV should increase a lot.....
Somehow it never seems quite so cold or wet while running around on a new bike. Get dressed and go ride. We need pics.
Nice bike and nice pictures! Last year I had the opportunity to ride several thousand kilometers through Peru on a Brazilian-built Honda NX400 Falcon, and the NC700X looks like an updated big brother to the 400. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=700838 As you can see in the Ride Report above, the little 400 was absolutely bulletproof, handling deep water crossings and 14,000 ft Andean mountain passes as well as the twisty switchbacks. Although a little short on power, the bike was nearly perfect for the type of riding I did. I have a feeling the NC700X is going to be an awesome utility bike too; very good as an urban commuter, decent on the road, and better in dirt than people are expecting. I am really looking forward to a test ride!
Hi all, After over 4 months of winter ownership of my silver NC700X its time to change it and i have to give it back this coming week - but fear i am getting a new NC700X but this time a white and with the DCT gearbox! jug: The silver manual bike has been great as a commuter tool. I always got 75mpg regardless of riding style. Its been 100% reliable, but its also still almost brandnew. This morning I cleaned it as I always like to hand the bikes back the way i get them. And all the winter dirt came off and it looks like on day one again.... So i will continue on this thread with the new DCT next week. Should be even more fun as i love the DCT gearbox and with the low rev range NC engines its a perfect match. Keep you posted. Lars
So today was the day when I changed my silver NC700X - manual transmission for a nice new white NC700XD - DCT! and as a first action I change the OE exhaust for a nice Akrapovic - which I am now testing for a while. here is picture of the new machine. I will report on MPG figures with the akra (currently with DB killer still in)! The old silver bike was fantastic and this morning I managed to get over 217 miles to a tank (14l tank volume only)! I am sure the DCT will perform similar and I do love the DCT with the NC700 engine. They match eachother very well. Thanks Lars
