Why do you prefer KTM 1190 over new R 1200 GS?

I've owned almost every modern BMW GS of the last decade. I switched to KTM and have never regretted it. I always was nervous about the BMW electrical and the final drive, then with the F800 I had valve cover leaks and worried about bent rear shock mounts. Mostly I always had to worry about capability, and ground clearance. Riding a trail 70% of the way only to turn around because the jugs wouldn't clear the two rocks coming up ahead. Not being able to gear the transmission for a specific mission was a bummer too.

Sure with the KTM I have a different set of worries but I never worry about capability and I've taken it on longer trips than the BMW's and had no problems (I do my own maintenance).

The BMW got me places but I was more tired and having less fun versus the KTM. I fought it for years, spending money trying to make the BMW more like the KTM. It was cheaper and easier to just buy the KTM.

If the 1190 lives up to the hype its going to be a great bike. The GS will be another GS. It won't be a leap forward in terms of ability, it will be an incremental update (YAWN).

I rode GS's before Ewan and Charley did their thing and that was fine.............................for awhile, then more and more wannabe Dakar riders started turning up. Good for BMW sales but bad when you are sat at a set of lights, look across and the guy is on exactly the same bike, same colour, same riding gear - only differnce was the colour of the same helmet :eek1

That was 2006 and the German Panzer had to go, have not looked back since. KTM rescued me from wall to wall GS mediocrity and boredom. First the 990S then the 990R with nearly 70,000 miles of 'Ready to Race' fun between them. Impersonating Meoni overtaking GS's on the inside or while stood on the pegs was worth every surprised reaction

Buy another GS Adventure? I would rather stab my eyes out with a blunt garden fork

My new 1190R arrives early April and I can't wait

But let's hope its not too popular, or in a few years I'll have the same problem and that could lead me back to the dark side and a Starbuck's carpark and who would want that?!?

just as unreliable as the bmw's i've owned

both pretty good

my brakes still work on my servo braked bm when motor off/battery as well

i love the way people knock bikes without owning them

I'm sure there are KTM riders that went to the Gspot side and still being happy about it.

KTM! By Far. I been in places like I'm sure non GS owners can be without compromising the reliability of the machine. But also for you; at your current location, you need to take in consideration dealer service.. I know Federico Henao who owns a KTM dealer back there, but not sure if currently have more options in Medellin.. Also BMW's ones .. I guess the only is "Autogermana"

On my bike the EFI is somewhat a problem for me, but offroad the gearing was more of an issue (its stock and I can change that). When I look at my 990 I think "that thing is a big ass dirt bike", I don't look at the 1190 and say the same thing. It's just my opinion and maybe I'm totally wrong, I'm only just speculating like about 99% of us are.

The 1190 has a listed dry weight of 467 lbs, which is only 10 lbs more than the 990. Any idea what the new liquid cooled GS is going to weigh?

The 1190 has 230 kg, the GS 238 kg, i think this makes 460 respectively 476 pounds.

Look at the GS1150 - it may be heavy but it's an army grade adv bike.

Look at the 950 Adv - it may be heavy but it's a big enduro bike.

The new KTM and BMW both look like road bikes to me!!!! It's wrong!!!!

Another reason was that the BMW GS Adventure version is not yet available while the KTM 1190 R version is already on the market.
As I need a bike now to drive to Istanbul later this year I could not wait another season for the BMW Adventure to arrive.

Coming from a Aprilia Dorsoduro the more sportive setup of the KTM was another factor to lead me to the KTM.
Actually I had attended a Test event last year and liked the SMT/SMR a lot so was close to dump my Aprilia last year.
Had actually closed the Test event with the statement that I wanted a SMT with the seat of the SMR and the Engine of the Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 (as my Aprilia made me realize the benefit of drive by wire and engine mapping effects).
If you than look at the 1190R you wonder if someone send that message to KTM

BMW scales are either way off or report dry weight...my GSA 2006 was at least 250+ kg wet...32 l of fuel + a shitload of metal around...the 1190 is 230 wet that's a huge difference imo....

For the R 1200 GS 2013 are 238kg specified ready to ride with at least 90% fuel on board!!
