According to the wiki they were invented in Germany but Buckminster Fuller working in NC developed the mathematics behind the concept to make them practical.

According to the website I linked the one in my photo was the largest geodesic dome designed by Buckminster.

Don't head to the Fairgrounds. The ones that used to be there by Dorton Arena on the Hillsborough St. side have been torn down. :huh

I was wondering about that when I read all the hoopla about it in old news posts last night...there are, however, others in the area.

Found a great photo of the Dorton Arena ones being helicoptered into place in 1954. Very cool. It's amazing to me that they stood for so long with almost no maintenance being done to them.

--- Anyone feel free to go after this. I'm splitting wood this afternoon and won't have time to ride till after dark if I get on the bike at all today.

This one is small but I believe it qualifies. 37 degrees today on the ride.

If the previous passes muster the new tag is a dome house.

Little different scale than the one I posted but its definitively a geodesic dome. I like the creativity.

So the next person will quite likely have the answer to both the previous tags. :evil

I so have a great one in mind for that - geodesic domed house. Local landmark, only known Peasedome (plywood geodesic dome) in NC, designed by an architect who worked with Buckminster Fuller at Synergetics, Inc.

Can I get there before dark?

Somewhat on topic...I had looked at information available at the time on the possibility of building a dome home back in the late 70's. There was a company building kits of the hardware needed (steel star bracket and associated bolts & nuts/washers). One only had to supply the building site, and use common lumber delivered to assemble the dome. Looked to be pretty simple and one could make a house quite cheaply at the time. Of course, you have to get used to round and sloped walls! :D

I was hoping one of my fellow brethren that play tag games in my home town would have snagged this by now. Heard it snowed there last night-can't understand why no one had gotten this yet! :scratch

Domed House - Peasedome construction - I believe it's currently sitting unoccupied. Back in the 60's when this was constructed the area was prime for out of town housing. Now it's turned into a parking lot @ rush hour and is being rezoned for commercial.

Sticking with the funky shaped building theme find a Quonset Hut type building.
