    Big news!

This year there will be a roadbook only section of the course. That means there will be NO GPS tracks for that one section, no paper maps, nada except the roadbook. So, EVERYONE will have to use the roadbook in that section, or follow someone who is. It's a new section off the standard routes, so nobody will have a clue where the course goes without the roadbook.

The remainder of the course (95%) will have GPS tracks. BUT it looks like both the roadbooks and the GPS tracks will not be provided for any stage until the evening before that stage is raced. So, when you finish one stage, you get the GPS tracks and roadbook for the next stage, no sooner. The traditional AAA "paper" map provided ahead of time will not have the course marked on it this year, only the points where it meets the highway will be on that map (so crew know where to go for pitting).

Direct your critique and questions to Ken Cameron. Even Mike Pearlman doesn't know exactly where the secret section of the course goes. Oh, and there are other major and minor course changes too. It isn't the 2012 course anymore!

    RALLY ON!

Very cool stuff Scott. Now I really wish I could make it this year. Hope the road book only idea catches on and they do it again next year!

    Scott,

Will the roadbooks be printed on rolls this year for the motorcycles? Or will we have to tape them together each night?

Thanks for all of your efforts!

Wow that sucks for the vintage cars. None of which have odometers and now not only do they have to find a way to rig one up, but also find a place to mount a roll chart holder.

How the heck are we going to download GPS tracks in the Bay of LA etc.?

    Is there internet there?

Half of my crew are NOT running a roadbook setup, just line of sight and GPS on their bikes like last year.

Seems a little late in the game to be changing the format.

All they have to do is resert the GPS odometer (or GPS trip meter or whaterver they call it in Lowrance terms) at the start of that Special, and use the GPS as their odometer. That's the way Ken verified all the roadbooks for three years, so they know it works fine.

Anyone with a navigator does not need a roadbook holder since the navigator can hold it in his hand, just like all other rally events do. For single-seater cars, a moto style roadbook holder will help. But a 6" piece of duct tape would get them by. Just tape the top edge of that section of the roadbook (about 8 pages maybe) to the dash, and rip each page off as you progress.

So, in the end, the worst is you have to learn how to display and reset your GPS odometer, and carry that piece of roadbook and a piece of duct tape along on that day.

I tried to tell everyone what was coming when I posted these two things a couple of weeks ago, but nobody caught on...

Dang, I was hoping the course would be released prior to the race. We were planning on having a couple chase crews staged. But now, where do we tell them to meet us? Especially a problem with limited and or no communication. The "fun" level for the chase crew just sunk a little. However the fun level and cost to ride a moto just went up, about 800.00 if you get a road book setup. I'm still gonna have fun. When the GPS track goes away somewhere along the peninsula, I'll stop and have a bite to eat and wait for someone to come along that looks like they might know what their doing and tag along in the dust. Easy....
