Trying to get set up for a ride soon, not finding much with searches, trying to mount full size Left system case to bike. Already have R1150R pipe to use, don't have any passenger peg brackets or pegs because bike came with jesse setup. Will factory 1150R brackets and pegs work good for full bag? Was thinking 1150RT might but looking at pics of the RT, not sure? thanks for any info
Go here. http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/PartsFiche.aspx You should be able to search the parts from each model and compare them. I had the system cases on my GSA for a while and went with the full left bag. The only mounting difference was the little rubber bumper off of the footpeg mount. Welded a small bracket that moved it over and it worked fine. I didn't run a muffler though, just a stubby off of the cat.
Happy trails sells a kit to lower the stock muffler. after I did mine I ran across a thread where a guy went to Autozone and found an elbow to do the same thing for about $5. then you have to make a bracket. for what its worth.... http://www.happy-trail.com/BMW-R1150GS-GSA-R1150R/Exhaust-Lowering-Kit-R1150GS-GSA-R1150R.aspx actually, the bracket that came with the kit didn't really work on my year 2000 and I had to modify it a bit. after seeing what it consists of I would do it all from scratch if I were to do it over.... especially since the price has gone up. edit: actually... it looks like the pipe they make has changed (for the better). it's really just an elbow about 3" long I also got the HT boxes.... the price is good & they work fine. the tops seal very well. the down side is (on mine) the metal seemed to be pretty soft and distorted at the attach point on my first gravel road ride. I riveted a doubler over the attach point & they have been fine ever since (3 years, 25000 miles). if you get HT cans, do NOT let them drill the attach points.... they make holes about 3x bigger than they need to be.... heard this from others as well. can post a pic is you like
As been said what happens is the 'groove' on the bag doesn't match the foot peg mount position. I just bolted a small piece of angle to replicate the 'groove' next to the factory molded one, but in position to accept the foot peg rubber do-dad.
Stainetune Australia does a low exhaust and muffler. I had one on my 1150gs and was able to have the full size panniers on either side. Lasts forever as we'll, Cheers
I ran this system on my R1150R and transferred it to my R1150GSA. Ditch the can altogether and use an exhaust tip only, provided you have the cat in place. Then make a bracket for the case to replicate the foot retainer on the full-size case that will be too far inboard. I just used two saddle brackets with mudguard washers on the inside for reinforcing. They worked for 120,000 kms on the R and 30,000 kms on the GSA and are still going strong.
\ I use a shorty exhaust as well. 2 decibels louder as measured by my buddy's meter. Lost a lot of weight and the noise gain is nothing. The bulk of the noise suppression on the 1150 is done by the cat/collector. As long as you haven't installed a y-pipe instead you have no real need for a silencer. Been running this way for some 40,000 miles now. Makes a full sized bag mount simple. I had this turn down made by a local exhaust shop-- a chain, not a specialty shop-- and the fellow wouldn't even take a fiver for it. Painted it black with some high-temp barbeque paint from the local hardwares and it was done. I should have-- will have-- one made in stainless by a real shop but I couldn't be arsed to get around to it. Maybe this year. I had the silencer low mounted but I was beating the hell out of it offroad. Not everyone does such ignorant things with their 1150s, though.
Another turndown here. Slightly louder, slightly deeper tone, actually sounds really nice. Great cheap mod and I now run two full size Jessies. Been running that for 20k miles.
great idea MIXR to use the stock foot peg bracket, what did you put next to the bag between the two indexing loops, is it a piece of alum? looks like something is sitting under the bag bumper, my buddy already has the Y pipe so he is losing the cat plans on running low pipe
I just used a scrap piece of very dense (hard) EVA foam from a thin yoga mat that I cut up for various jobs. The colour isn't great, but it's soft enough to allow the foot-bumper to press into it and hard enough not to wear through. It's just a cushion between the hard plastic bumper and the hard plastic case, and held on with double-sided tape (and the case when located). I was going to replace it with a better colour when it wore out, but it hasn't!
Just ditched my silencer as well. Had an old cat layin around and some polishing....... It a very good grade stainless steel.
Pretty sure that the laws pertaining to modifying motorcycle exhaust systems vary from state-to-state, and there are no Federal laws regulating it. Also, there's very little conformity from state-to-state. So, its kinda what you might expect--in Alaska they got no regulations at all while in New York just about anything you do to the exhaust is illegal.
Hey the cat cut-off looks great, and you saved the environment a bit of stainless waste. My farm type stubby is looking too rusty to paint so I'm going to copy yours. Thanks GS addict . Thinking now I may hang the muffler back on as a stash tube.
