Anyone pre-order the new Google tablet? The Mother-in-law has a Kindle Fire that I've messed around with, pretty cool. The Google tablet is supposed to be better and the price seemed right. Anyone jump?:ear

I am thinking about it, and I have a Kindle Fire. What draws me towards the Nexus are the somewhat better hardware specs and pure Android. So you can install anything on the Android market on it. I cannot do that on the modified Android used by the Fire, even with sideloading apps.

You can install Cyanogen mod on a Fire and get a pretty pure Android experience. I did that, but the lack of a GPS chip renders a lot of Google's location based services irrelevant. If I didn't have an iPad the Nexus would be a fun toy.

I ordered one in 8GB. It will just be for play so I thought that would be enough. ADVrider/CNN/email and Angry birds for the kid on trips. Anyone use Google Play? I hear it's like Amazon but a little more money.

It looks really good. I'll eventually get one, but for now I'm waiting.

I don't need a 7" tablet (already having a smartphone and a 10" tablet) but I think that size would be ideal for a lot of things.

For those that have ordered this or are going to, what made you choose the Nexus 7 over the Samsung 7" tablet?

I think the main difference is that on a Nexus branded device, you'll get the OS updates w/o having to go through a 3rd party such as Samsung or a carrier.

    Here's my take on things.

I've had better luck with Asus products than I have with Samsung products.

Higher resolution, faster processor, cheaper, and Samsung is lousy updating software.

The galaxy tab has a sd card slot which is nice.

No sd card and no cell data make it a little useless for me. But the price is excellent. I actually have an ipad 1 and frankly I can't see the need to upgrade yet.

I know nothing of the Android market place and various apps since I've got an iPhone.

Something about this device has me interested. If it has a GPS without the requirement of buying the cell hardware is it possible to preload maps from Google's database? I'm thinking this might be a nice GPS unit if placed in the map pocket of a tank bag. Of course there are other features that the device would be used for, but working as a GPS on my bike would ideal with a 7" display.

Google just added the ability to download offline maps, but you can only select small sections at a time, an area maybe 20-30 miles square. You can't download an entire state or region. I'm sure that will come one day, but not yet.
