The "new road" as a bypass around Crab Orchard has been under construction, obviously, for a while as they link each county on the wider safer new road to I75. I've used it a few times and it's faster, but not near as fun to ride and no where near as scenic. I have not been to S-tree or over in that section of the Daniel Boone National Forest. I am a little skeptical about going alone on a Wee because of my very low level of experience and the very high weight of my bike. I'd love to do some ADV riding in that area with another rider or two. I've read about other groups gathering together to host a low/no cost ADV ride and I suspect that we have enough riding in that area for big bikes, that I would love to organize some type of annual event. Unfortunately, I don't know where the riding is. However, that does mean that I get to go exploring to find the trails, routes, and interesting rides. I've started that adventuring last year and I have found some pretty crazy back roads that I have mapped with my GPS when I was trying to meet up with some other riders. The back roads and goat trails that I ended up riding, alone, were amazing but prevented me from ever finding the group I was trying to locate. I look forward to learning more about Kentucky and the area of South Central Kentucky, around Mt. Vernon, London, Corbin, Livingston areas, in which I live, with the hope of being able to get together with you guys and girls for some great riding.
I'm down for a get togather, I'm in Paris just north east of Lexington. I don't have a dual sport or dirt bike, but I have plenty of fun on my vulcan. I'll try to post a picture of her (next to an old TB hospital).
VTXmotoman and I decided to ride to the new MotorCycle Superstore in Louisville on Saturday. VTX motoman has a really nice KLR650 We headed out of Mercer county on hwy 390. Acording to some of the locals it is becoming very popular with the motorcycle riders. It is no Dragon but it has some nice twisties. Be careful, it also has a lot of side roads and driveways as well. We crossed into Anderson county on Sulfer Lick road We went thru Bloomfield and Shepardsville and took I 65 into Louisville and finally success. The Superstore is not located in the easiest place to get to. They have a nice selection of helmets, boots, jackets and pants. Not so many accessories or tires. A lot of the merchandise seems to be discontinued or overstock items. Many of the sizes are very large or very small. They have nice prices though. It was getting late and cold when we left. We put the hammer down and headed for home. One quick stop at Taylorsville Lake to see the sun settting.
They're overstock and closeout items. I stop in frequently when I need something and occasionally I'll luck up on what I need in the correct size. Got some nice Tourmaster boots and Aerostitch gloves at really good prices last fall. John
390 has long been a very popular road in that area. Very similar to routes 10 , 22, and 227 north of Lexington. However, there are many such roads around that can be found with just a little exploring. Plenty of covered bridges and other cool places to check out as well.
Not sure I would call them a dealer. All I saw was some gloves. No suits or jackets. Their selection of anything is limited to leftovers and overstock. Lots of xxl and xxxl and xxs but I got lucky with the boots. John
My son wanted a jacket for his birthday last year. We rode up to the Super Store and I gave him $100 and said this is starter money , choose wisely. There was an in store sale going on , he got a nice 3 season jacket and change back from the $100. I wanted some armored jeans and found 2 pair of Cortech that fit. They were priced at $67 each , which seemed about right, but, to to the sale , when I checked out the price was reduced to$26.50 per pair. Deal !
Saturday VTXmotoman and I decided to ride over to the Daniel Boone NF. We didn't take a lot of pictures on the way down but basically back roads down to Renfro Valley. We rode some of the dual sport route but because of all the rain we had it was really muddy. We starting working our way over to STree Campground using directions from Mr Garman. We ended up here. You can see the road continues on the other side of the creek just above the seat on my DR. STree campground. There were a few people riding there. We took gravel sections into McKee and over to Turkey Foot Campground. If you have never been there it is a really nice place. This is the most dirt VTXmotoman's KLR has ever seen We took hwy 89 up to Irvine. There is a nice curvy section KY Senic Byway on that stretch of road. Of course no guardrails and steep drop offs make it really interesting. It was getting late, sorry no pictures. From Irvine we made our way back home.
