Ben, I think a good design would be to use the shape and color of a full size marker. Then add some text that indicates 100, 200 . . . through 500 (five slightly different stickers) sites knocked off. Beneath the text in the top of the sticker frame, one could slip in some kind of image of a motorcycle.

Here's an attempt with a solid modeling CAD package... Could make it brown...

Cool, Ben. I was just photoshopping something up using the same shield. I was thinking it would be cool to keep the badger inside, though. Stupid WHS changed their logo to something smooth and current. So finding that shield in a ready-to-modify online pic is hard.

You would make Sarah Davis McBride proud if you did this.

Looking good so far! Sub "historical" instead of "official".

The original markers had 'official' and then sometime around 1997-98, they decided to make them 'historical' markers. Using 'Historical' helps give the point of the sticker across.

I just finished upgrading the GPS file for the historical markers. In addition to the street directions remarks, the files now also contain the URL for the individual marker's web page. This allows you to see a photo of and read the marker ahead of time. So . . . much of the information on the matrix is not incorporated into the GPS file via "Waypoint Properties".

When the attachments thing get worked out, I'll post the updated version of the file in GPS Central. (otherwise, PM with an e-mail address)

    OK, local boys....

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but, I am looking into my first GPS.
I would like to use the type of info Cannon has out there as well as track my routes. I can't spend 700 bucks!

What do you use? What should I get?

The GPS threads just have way too much info for me to digest.

PM me or post as others may have the same Q's

    Thanks, Cory

If you want to ride trails, get a 60cx (used or refurbished).

If you want to ride roads, there are other options.

Discussions on GPS could go on and on as there are too many variables.

I'm up to 260 markers... So am going to get some stickers printed-- Available at no cost to anyone who posts pics:deal .

Any input on the design? Anyone want to make it more swanky? I believe full color is okay, they're going to be printed on bumper sticker type stock. Right now just figuring on two intervals, 250 and 500.

Well I contacted the MN historical society, and it seems that in 2003 MN cut funding for the historical marker program. Even with that they sent me an access database with all 1575 markers! Unfortunately they do not have good descriptions of where they are. For example a lot of them just have Town names. So do I do the 500 in WI, or attempt the 1500 in MN?

Created a google spread sheet for the MN markers

    Check out waymarking.com & historicalmarkers.com

you should be able to download at least a partial .GPX file with waypoints for MN

    They are a little sparse...

    historicmarkers.com lists 23 total markers.
    Waymarking.com lists 110.

So those are a good start, but still have a long row to hoe...

Of the 511 marker waypoints, I've garnered 492 pics and uploaded them. I would really like to find at least 8 more to get to the satisfying 500 mark...

    The 19 missing markers:

It took about 10 months to complete with two idle months in winter. I saved all the GPS tracks:

They total about 8,500 miles. The longest single trip was to Duluth and back in a weekend--1,259 miles.:ricky

    Some personal faves-

Father of automobile annoys town with infernal contraption-
    [IMG]

    A sign about another obsession-
    [IMG]

Cheif waupaca drops dead after raining on his buddies parade-
    [IMG]

one about Dawn Manor that was missing for a bit since it used to be located on ground that was washed away when Lake Delton emptied out-
    [IMG]

Major "Dick" Bong- a Patriot that did great things for this country. Stop giggling dammit!

I'll email Cannon my updated GPX file with corrected waypoints, and Get to work over the winter months getting the waymarking internet sites up to snuff.

Oh, and here's my tip- When someone inquires what your doing in full riding gear wandering around a city park, DO NOT reply "I'm looking for a sign." They tend to look at you weird:huh

Great job Ben! :thumb 492 out of 511.

If you update those waymark sites WI will have one of the most complete records of anyone. What a great public service!

The Hysterical Society might want to know about the missing stuff - just for their records. They would probably be interested in the updated spreadsheet with precise locations as well. I guess that could all be rolled into a single reference sheet once I get the original updated.

I'm a sucker for these historical markers. Ben, could you please shoot me a copy of the waypoint file (powershouse at gmail dot com)?

I learned how Wisconsin trees paid for Cornell University a while back:

I'm a sucker for roadside oddities also. On the ride home from CADVR I ran across a record black bear in Glidden, WI and the Moose Theater Lutefisk Marching Band.

Historical markers, rustic roads, roadside oddities...they're all good for moto flower-sniffing!

Done. And that Cornell womans club marker looks super familiar.

I decided I'm going to count 536 as a find since the weird little marker is what all the websites have listed...

And I have leads on 259, 260, 426, 488, and 528. (Been working REAL hard today)
