Since the OP is riding on the interstate, I doubt it would be a 4 hour ride for anyone to find him some oil! (assuming he somehow "...punched a hole in the valve cover" while traveling down the interstate). Wow, 5 pages on carrying oil. :huh

I can pick my own up pretty quickly, and I can shut it off even quicker. plus that looks like a gravel road, not too terribly off camber either, not really what I would call "difficult terrain" Never seen much oil come out of their with the engine off. Do you know those folks? and know the story? I wonder if they didnt realize it was holed, and continued to ride? have you ever adjusted your valves? How much oil comes out when you remove the valve cover? Maybe next time try adjusting them with the engine off.
Have you ever dropped it on uneven ground , Makes a big difference. Take off the valve cover and lay it on it's side The rider dropped it on Cleman Mt. By the time it was righted and repaired, it needed oil. That's another possibility. have you ever adjusted your valves? How much oil comes out when you remove the valve cover? yes, and the first thing I did was turn it off, the next thing was right the bike, after that was check for holes in things that contain oil. if the valve cover is off, I would lay it on the OTHER side.
It's a 600 mile trip, I doubt very much he's going all off road to get there. My point is still valid, either interstate or surface streets if he somehow "...punch(es) a hole in the valve cover", it won't be a 4 hour ride to find oil!
its good therapy! Thanks! Besides with you and HANKS racking up all those miles, I will have to put 1,000,000 miles on my bike to prove Royal Purple is at least as good as my former beloved mobil 1. So riding that many miles is not that bad....i am guessing....lol about carrying ... my experience with RP was no oil was ever required for the duration between changes. That was 4,000 to 6,000 depending on the kind of milage. With RP in my car, I never have to add even at 10,000. But then we all know that RP does not work that well.
I didn't realize we were talking about riding in remote off road locations! OBVIOUSLY that changes things, better carry at least three quarts in that case. As for mixing oil, who cares? Oils are designed to mix with no bad effects. IF this keeps you up nights, carry all you want, but experience from road riding in the civilized world leads me to recommend against it! I appreciate there are many who don't care but I would never go as far as saying they "are designed to mix with no bad effects". All manufacturers caution against this as the different additives used can restrict the effectiveness of each other.
^^^^^ - but only sometimes. Gnerally, I'm only checking oil at fuel stops and I can always pick up a bottle of something that will work. The few times I've ever added oil on a long trip, I realized later that I didn't need it. If I dropped the bike and crunched something so badly I lost a load of oil, I supose an epoxy (or duct tape ) repair and a quart or two might get me home, but it's a pretty unlikely scenario for me and as I don't ride alone that far from home terribly often, I'm not too bothered. BTW - it wouldn't hurt your Royal Purple-infused engine to put in a few hundred ml of $1.99 gas station 10W40 should the need suddenly arise - but if you're using that much oil, WTF are you doing putting $$$$ synthetic in it in the first place?
