As 22manyrides points out, the step-up, or down, is the critical part. In front of my neighbor's house is a "perfect" loading ditch/bank. Back into the right spot and the tailgate is level with the ground, or nearly so, and almost touching so the "step" is not a problem. To one side of that spot, the tailgate is slightly higher than ground level, perfect for unloading; to the other side, the tailgate is slightly lower, perfect for loading without having to "walk" the bike up, in gear, engine running, feathering the clutch.

In December, we loaded my K100RS into a just-bought short-bed pickup, rear wheels touching the curb above a gutter drain on a city street in California, with a 2x12 alongside the ramp so I could walk up alongside the bike. That was steeper than I like but two friends were there to push while I controlled with the front brake and clutch (xmsn in gear so that, effectively, I had a rear brake, too) but had they not been there I could have walked the bike up "on the clutch," engine running. Without the 2x12 I/we would have been looking for another spot.

I've hauled a few bikes in my 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan over the years.

I've been able to load and unload all these bikes by myself with no accidents thus far.

Room enough to haul a bike and sleep right beside it. Went from AK to Deal's Gap and back this way.

Works for me.... and Comet. :D

The KLR was the toughest tho. Had to compress the forks, take off the wind screen, and roll the handle bars down.

    "Are you about ready?!?" :lol3

You have it right not when there is nothing more to bring, but when nothing more can be left behind.

It's amazing how much stuff fits in this luggage. When I got home from my BRP/Deals Gap trip, I could not believe how heavy each box was to remove.

Here is my poor pickup loaded to the gills. I had it weighed when setting off for this trip, only 540 pounds over the GVWR.:eek1

So about as overloaded as some of the bikes here :lol3.
