Took this pic a couple weekends ago, while riding by a creek along Helvetia-Adolph Road in WV. The inscription is "Sand Run 1830". Nothing under it but creek (left or right fork of the Buckhannon River I believe); nothing over it but woods AFAICS. Perhaps an abandoned railroad bridge? Dunno. I've emailed the WV Historical Society and they replied that they'd look into it.

    Scratch33,

No idea if this has anything to do with your picture, but if you follow this link:

    http://books.google.com/books?id=zvVLAAAAMAAJ&pg=PR17&lpg=PR17&dq=%22Sand+Run+Tunnel%22&source=bl&ots=Dsnv1FqIU7&sig=14BkueG8afeZXaUW3fyj2C7sDd8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=yqORUey1K_L9yAGv74GwAw&ved=0CCwQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22Sand%20Run%20Tunnel%22&f=falsej

Search for "Sand Run Tunnel" and it brings up a picture (Plate XXIII I believe) ... looks kind of like yours, possibly on the other end?

I'm from WV originally, so I had some interest in your pic. Thanks for sharing.

I think you nailed it - part of the old Coal & Coke Railway. The other end of the tunnel should be a quarry.

I see it's also listed as a Geocache site. Would be interesting getting to it - the hillsides are extremely steep & gnarly.

    Thanks!

The county crews have been doing a major cleanup and brush clearing of the highway on the Hamakua coastline. This is the remains of a train tunnel near Laupahoehoe Gulch, usually barely visible behind all the brush: [IMG]
