The Euro Orphanage is coming along with the addition of a non running 1982 Guzzi Monza....:eek1 The engine runs but no drive.....traced it to a lack of a crown wheel in the final drive..... The story went like....mate owned it.....sat for years not going.....took it into Guzzi shop....they went into receivership.....eventually got bike back of receivers.......bought off mate for mid life crisis....... When I went around his missus in a real " Footballers Wife" London accent told me how I saved him from divorce...... she was scary....... The shaft was also very neglected.....rusty and pitted.... Used parts are not that easy ( cheap) to come by...... scored a final drive and shaft from Germany.
I'd get my nut nailed to the wall if I came home with another bike.. 'Good on ya mate'. Not jealous....much
Man, I'd love an old Guzzi. I'm still waiting for the midlife crisis to kick in though....or the kids to grow up and leave home to free up some coinage.

Hey you're from my old stomping ground. grew up on Richardson rd over the road from the Akarana golf course. With all your toys I'd say you'd be in the rich areas tho What's the plan for the guzzi? cafe it, original it or put it in the back for future rainy days? Actuallu wouldn't some parts be interchangeable for the 500 racer like the front end with twin discs etc?
well....I used to like in Belgrove....old two story house with matching garage on left ...... worked for Sturrock and Greenwood...... man I hated fishing boats...... Plan for Guzzi is...get it going...vin it....ride it as it...... or the remix version....Mk1 Lemans fairing.....led indicators...and a shortened rear guard with Lucas style light ( left over from Thruxton) The 500 is coming along....now have a 336 cam, looking at Manley SS valves, beehive springs and titanium retainers.....10:1 compression....balanced ....some 32 Dells...... Rich area......its Mt Roskill....not Mt Eden..... HD in three weeks, took whole final drive/wheel in to get new soft shoes fitted and arced..... Man its a busy life in DotComville.
I have a mate that has a 500 Monza been parked up for about 3 years.. motors shot , to meany miles..runs but just needs a re-build.. He just bought a V7 classic... He lives in Nelson.. bike in ChCh..
It not mine but it somehow spends most of life in my garage. A mate bought it last year and helped repair the plastic bits as a project this past winter. As soon as it was all put back together and looking mint, my mate who will remain nameless (Rene van Irsel) dropped a valve at around 150 kph. Nec minut. Back in the garage. As you say, sourcing parts ain't easy or cheap and it looks like the Guzzi is going nowhere for a while. Beautiful bikes though. Dc
I started a fix er upper thread on the main forum as I'm needing some Guzzi input. Its a delayed story as I did not want to start one in case in ended up back on Trade Me as parts..... I have done all the cheap/free bits like the brakes, oil, filter, tappets, drive,shaft, carbs and its been a lot of fun/challenge. This morning took it for a ride......runs nice, gears all work, linked brakes work....sounds really cool. So then pulled off the front end to have a look. ummmmmm........ Guzzi is now under a blanket in the corner.... due to the dilemma of the front forks needing new cartridges....them being spency...and the front forks are under sized to start with...... Wanna buy an R65 and a skootah mista? On TM.
Guzzi is now a runner....well apart from stopping twice on the test ride, I suspect the 30 year old ND coils are stuffed, especially the one with was dripping out of it. Dyna make a trigger unit to replace the two sets of points might go with that as I hate ignition issues. Brakes take a bit of getting used to with the foot brake doing the rear and one front disc too. I could not find any 35mm clip-ons with a 50 mm rise so put on a set of std bars, works ok. The 35mm fork and taper bearing upgrade look to have been worth doing. Just need to sort out the fairing and lighting next.
Months later..... Ordered some bits from Gutsi bits in the UK and they arrived this week. Fitted new ignition coils as the old ones had was coming out of them. New carb rubbers and choke cables too. Waiting on the Dyna Ignition trigger unit to replace the points set up which apparently is hard to get right and goes out of tune fast. Then its off to get it vinned and see if its any good to ride or move it on. I hoping for light responsive back road run.
Dyna Ignition arrived, fitted it and it didn't work. Spat Dummy, removed Dyna ignition and put back in box. Scoured internet for clues. Refitted Dyna ignition and it didn't work. 12 volts on multimeter to ignition unit. Armed with net info, rigged up BMW indicator light across coil. Nothing. Ran separate wire to ignition from battery and hey presto light came on. Progress. Set up timing a nd started engine, life. Found evil wiring connection. Buoyed with success fitted faring and rest of electrics. Donned some bike gear but with trainers in preparation of walking home. Did 20 minutes of back streets....even got a nod off a sports bike. So that's every old shitter in my shed running and some even road legal. So work done of Guzzi consists of: Replacing the spaghetti 32mm forks with 35mm Lemans ones. Replacing the bicycle cup and cone steering head bearings with Taper ones. ( this requires the longer steering stem which just happened to come with forks). Mate making up spacers for discs. Rebuilding calipers getting a final drive from Germany rebuilding the shaft. new ignition system. In house terms probably overcapitalised. It is cool tinkering with various bikes though.
does it have enough performance to be interesting or do you have to find other fun things about riding it?
