Alps, Italy and Croatia report

Great pics. Glad ya got around to posting.

Dubrovnik is a magnificent town, has to be seen. It is surronded by ancient walls and the city smells history everywhere. It is a very popular place and I realized that when I arrived to town. It turned out to be difficult to find a decent priced place to stay. While driving around under the burning sun and almost giving up and planning to drive outside of town to find a place to stay, I met a friendly croat who is also a biker, he had 3 bikes. He offered me his extra room

View of the town from top of city walls. Unfortunately, Serbian forces attacked the city during the civil war and you can see the different color between old and renovated roof tiles. The whole town is a world heritage protection area now.





I met two super friendly girls from Ireland during the boat trip from Ancona to Zadar. They were travelling with bus and we decided to meet in Dubrovnik. We had great time in the city.

I am a scuba diver and heard that there is a german torpedo boat wreck nearby so I decided to make a dive there before I start my long journey back home. The wreck is close to a fantastic small harbour village called Trstenik.



I liked the place so much that I stayed one day extra. I did my dives with friendly diving instructors of Freaky Diving Center (www.freaky-diving.com) The torpedo boat is from WWII. Some pictures from center's website.









Unfortunately, I need to start to drive back home. I drive towards north, pass Slovenia then to Salzburg. Change oil in the Yamaha center and drive north west to Munich, load my bike to autozug (www.autozug.de) and arrive to Hamburg next morning. Then as usual, through Danmark reach Sweden.

It was a great trip, my bike had no problems and I met very nice people during the journey. The next trip was to northern Spain in 2004.

Thanks, that was a VERY enjoyable trip report, very well narrated and great pictures. You did a very interesting route, one I want to follow more or less (but starting from Spain) sometime in the future... we'll see when!

Thanks so much for that report. I loved the photos and hearing about the ride. I've been to some of the places you visited, but not on a bike. I also enjoyed hearing about the people you met.

The total trip took 4 weeks but I stayed in Bonn, Munich, Florence and Dubrovnik couple of days extra, so total of 2.5 weeks of pure motorcycle riding. I did around 8000 kms total.

Great Stuff! I had a just a few days motorcycling around The German & Austrian Alps last year, I would have loved to keep going south as you did. Your pics bring back some memories & remind me that I should write up a trip report!

The monolinguists among us are also very thankful when you euro guys take the time to put up a trip report in english for us

Amen to that! I wish I was fluent in more than one language. So - thanks for translating to English and sharing your great trip with us.

When I was stationed in Germany, I tried very hard to learn as much German as I could, and also the basics for any country we visited (mostly France and Italy). I think the locals appreciate even a good attempt. I never got to the point where I could carry on a comfortable conversation, though.

I heard this one while I was there:

What do you call a person who speaks 2 languages? (Bilingual)
What do you call a person who speaks 3 languages? (Trilingual)
What do you call a person who speaks 1 language? (American)

Great report and great pictures! I remember sitting in a stau (or whatever the Italians call a traffic jam) under that section of covered highway coming through Northern Italy into Austria (near Brenner Pass if I recall correctly). Unfortunately, I was stuck on a bus! What a beautiful area, though!! You Europeans have so many cool places to ride!!
