Road Testing my Spud (prototype II)

The two story white house on the south side of Hwy 18 next to the old school. Lots of trees. Spud and bike were in the backdoor drive. Might have been hidden behind my lovey wife's Hummer. Can't miss it.

About ¼ mile past this posting, given the grade, my high first gear and street rubber, I “Y”turned around and with a bit of tire and clutch slippage climbed back out.




Mackay Bar is down there on the Salmon River about five miles and 3000' lower than where I turned back. That's the Cove creek dranage about 1000' above the Salmon.



Tripod? We don't need no tripod.

Hey, Dude. Ride what you got whenever you can. (1200 GS/wet-- 564 VN800C/wet 569.)

On the run back to camp the .243 and camera are stowed to give the road full attention. Undulating through warm light and cool shadow following the mountains dry southern to green northern exposures the super-trap coughed chugs at the switchbacks and droned along between. Shoving the wide bars at the steep turns then pulling them back with the throttle, over and over. It was relaxing, like driving a boat. I even got into second gear a few times. Fun ride.










Back at camp I spun spud around and popped her open. M+B for dinner.







I had ridden along the Gospel Hump Wilderness and then the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Took a nap till dusk then walked down through the woods to creek side of a meadow. Sat on a stump with my New England Arms Handy Rifle across my lap and binoculars dangling. I are a hunter. A light wind came up on the back of my neck carrying my man stench out across the meadow, Shouldered my rifle, picked up my cane and offed to my bed. Hunt over.

Love the spud.

I would love to see a diagram of how it slides open and how it is a one hand release.

I have a beer in my hand as we speak.

That thing is awesome. Sure beats pitching a tent at every stop.

What do you do when it rains?

Like you, the years are not being kind to my body, and the tent-on-the-ground thing is getting harder to live with. Would definitely love to visit with you over a fire someday about how this idea came about.

Since I only live about 20 minutes away from Roswell (Nampa), I'll PM you about it sometime soon...

And YES, if you make it, I will buy one!

It has a latch that can be worked with one hand, then you pull the handle atop the galley lid and it rolls open. Set your tired bones down and rummage easily stowage stacked to your sides.

My camera died. My ride back to the Treasure Valley included strong gusting winds shifting across my front along the Salmon. Pulled at 65-75. Pulled well, tracked almost better than running the same winds without spud. The strong left the wind in Riggins. Back to the farmland of home.



Now I'm out and about Boise, chumming for local investors and introducing spud to it's city cousins.

I'm diggin spud II myself.My back and left leg let me know frequently that my tent days are drawing to a close.

You are on to something--Spud looks great!

I would like to see a pic of the mechanism allowing it to open up and a detailed explanation of how it works.

What about rain? some type of tarp over the part that opens up?

Thanks for the positive comments. It helps keep the drive alive. I'm going to run Spud up to Lake Owyhee this weekend and should get a dust of snow. It will make for good pics with the top on. Also will be testing a heater.

No thread. My first proto was so light, I pulled it over to Oregon with my ct90.
