Indeed there is not. Ever since they closed Angelina Nat'l Forest to offroaders (unless your on a horse) the only place to ride in East Texas is the Sam Houston Nat'l Forest north of Houston. It's great riding when it isn't closed for one reason or another but after 40+ years of riding there it's gotten a little old for me at least.
I just put the no-toil oil on my air filter.....damn! That stuff's a mess. I should have got out some latex gloves, because I think I used about three ounces of the cleaner just to get it off my hands. Plus, I have to wait 30 minutes for this stuff to set up before I can slap it back on?! I'm too impatient for this stuff! Haha! Does no-toil give you a substantial performance boost? What's the draw? I'm thinking of just ditching this stuff and picking up a petroleum based filter oil down here.
Speaking of changing the oil... How many quarts do you all typically use when refilling? I just changed the oil for the first time on my 2002 XRL (bought it a week ago). Some online research recommended 2 quarts. I put in 2 quarts, cranked/warmed it up to let the oil circulate, checked the dipstick... It showed it being really low. Is 2 quarts not the recommended amount? Also... I used Honda GN4 10w-40 oil. I figured this first time I'd use the recommended oil from Honda... What do you all use? What's cheaper but better performing? Thanks!
I use 2.5 quarts. The bike doesn't know it's slightly overfilled and I keep the extra 1/2 quart for top off's.
My standard response to any oil thread. Use Baby Seal Oil. It is the tears of their mothers that makes it soooo sweet.
A little late to ask now but...if you have a UNI filter why not bring the UNI brand cleaner and oil on the trip? Damn, that sucks! A guy about an hour North of me just had his "L" stolen too. My 04 needed the 2.05 quarts(close enough) to fill it every oil change. The first oil change on my 08 took 2.5 quarts to bring it to the full mark... YAMV(your amount may vary)
"15." "Well when you get older you'll understand these things, now get up there and piss in the GD radiator!"
Having radiators (or not) isn't the issue. My KLX400 only ate coolant once in the 3+ years I had it and that was when I rode it in a small town parade with my moto friends. That was a idle in place 2 minutes, then roll forward 30' affair. I rode lots of ST with the 400 and never had a problem. I swapped because the XRL has a more flexible gearing for both trail and street and a more comfy seat than the KLX. Two things I do miss about the KLX was the instant throttle response from the FACTORY installed pumper carb and the 30 less pounds it weighed when the bike decides to take a dirt nap.
