Hey Doug! This is pretty common on these bikes. I'm guessing it's one or more things ... all of which are cheap and easy to fix. 1. worn chain and sprockets. riders neglect the front sprocket. really causes a bad feeling through out the bike. Same with badly worn chain. Get the best quality chain and sprockets you can find. OEM Suzuki make really good, long lasting spockets. DID chain is best .... 525 X Ring please! 2. Cush drive rubbers. Pull rear wheel. Replace Cush rubbers or stuff cut pieces on inner tube as a temp fix. REally smooths our DR drive line. 3. Check wheel bearings ... especially rear Hubb bearings (there are three on the dR ... two for the wheel, one for the Hubb. Have a feel. Come back after you've checked these things, let us know. (PS: followed many of your rides ... fantastic stuff Doug! )
Doug, Check and make sure the motor mounts are tight. EDIT never mind I see you already checked. I had a weird vibration once - fixed it by replacing chain and sprocket and going back to 525 with bolt on front sprocket vs using retaining clip. Ray
I have a 1998 DR650 that needs a top end rebuild, will i be able to drop this 94 cylinder and piston in it for the rebuild?
#2 worked for me... it turned out that worn cush drive rubbers were making a vibration exactly like you describe.
If you live in Australia, 18-30,000km, rest of the world, 30-60,000km. All years. The good news is you've got probably as much chance of it happening as winning the lottery.
Will any other model years fit other than the 1998 engine, would u buy chance know where i could find the cylinder and piston kit for a 98? dr650?
1996 through 2013 are all the same, so you've got a wide availability. Can't help with sourcing though, someone will be along in a minute.
Mine has almost 30,000km now. I'm getting into the zone. I don't buy lottery tickets so maybe I'll be okay with the DR too :) Sent via aldis lamp on Tapatalk
Steph, if you're really concerned, there is a thread concerning the issue. I think it's entitled "DR650 3rd Gear Blow-ups" or something similar.
I checked all the stuff, cush rubbers looked good, bearings feel fine, fr sprocket is tight on the shaft. mounting bolts are all tight, no cracks anywhere I guess my friend is just gonna get a numb ass this week. I'm leading a 1k mile trip thru Bulgaria & Romania, most days will be 200 or so miles on small roads, so it shouldnt be that bad. Thanks for the ideas tho! Doug
I ordered (PC) the new front Galfer 320mm wave rotor am I going to have to reroute the brake line or will it clear?
Hi Zdiver1 Here's a 320 EBC on my DR. Make sure the clamp at the arrow is secure, if the brake line slips down, the rotor will cut it. This happened to some guys when adding stainless brake lines.
Thanks, I'll check it out. We sold the Beemers recently and have just the pair of DRs right now. A third one is planned a bit later this summer when the intial spring buying frenzy is over. Emmbeedee's bike has almost 50K kms on it now and we want to find him a 'newer' one with lower mileage. Then the Purple Passion will become the emergency backup and guest bike
Third gear blowups are not going to keep me awake at night... in fact, now that the Beemers are gone, I sleep much better knowing I won't have to worry about onboard computers, fuel injection, abs, or expensive side panels. As I was riding the DR the other day I thought of a tagline: "It's not how much you pay for it; it's how much fun you get out of it that counts" I find it funny that when travelling on BMW F series bikes, often the only people who'll stop and talk to you are on the same model. R owners tend to look down on the F, probably because the F can go anywhere the R can, but more cheaply. Harley riders don't talk to BMW riders, afaik. But on the DR, anyone talks to you! Women in minivans, other bike riders, old people, young people. It's amazing.
Thanks guys - I will look around. Flag & southern CO are easiest for me. Grifter: nothings wrong. More looking ahead when I start breaking stuff. But I would like to find a shop or person that can fabricate or teach me how to put together dashboard type stuff - not exactly sure what yet besides a couple 12 volts.
I have the SS Lines and I think you have my stock lines! It looks close with the stock rotor so I will have to make sure it is tight. Paul
