Does anyone have any decent maps to share. I know the dirty bikers oman club used to do a lap of Oman but I can't seem to find the details anywhere. I've read some great ride reports but never one that showed the routes
+1 This ride report talks about the lap of Oman, but the pics or map (if there was one posted) don't show up any more.
I don't think so. I went back 2 days later to get the details and the ad was gone. I wish I had the time to fly and ride that baby back to Muscat. I'm not a big BMW fan, but it seems you have to jump at anything decent here as the pickings are truly slim. I'm biding my time; I need to rack up a couple of paychecks first! Just go up to the Emirates to get whatever you want I drove up on a Wednesday evening, in my Landy with a trailer to buy a DR650 I saw on Dubizzle I camped near the border late on Wednesday night, drove into Dubai on Thursday morning and started the whole process............... 0900 met the seller 1000 finished export papers at Dubai vehicle centre, handed over the dosh 1130 arrived UAE border 1230 left UAE border having cleared customs 1245 arrived Oman border 1330 left Oman border having cleared customs 1900 got home, had beer It is really really easy And now the best part is buying $1000s of stuff from Procycle in the USA, also really easy, and riding it in Oman
Rumor has it there is a KLR650 on sale again at the Harley shop (new or used, I don't know). Buying in Dubai is easy. I bought a slightly used MotoGuzzi at a shop, and they took care of all the papers, transport and customs for me for OR 150, delivered to my villa in Muscat. Richey, nice DR! No import duty into Oman from UAE, right? Anyway, now is the perfect time to buy a bike and go riding.
Idle time now that the weather is hot. Mid-day I tooled around and took photos of the motorcycle dealers. I also created a Google map that shows the deler locations. First, the map is here https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=201674603674274468234.0004dcfeeb0d7d473728b&msa=0&ll=23.597026,58.476105&spn=0.170836,0.338173 Now the photos - well, the outside front of the buildings, so you can spot them as you go wheeling by. Yamaha (4 cruisers, 2 delivery bikes, 1 dirt bike, some quads and 2 Seadoos) Kawasaki, new location (mix of sport, dirt, sport touring, dual sport/KLR) Harley (ummm...Harleys? ) Honda (2 delivery bikes, CBR 250/600/1000, NC700S and X, ST1300) Royal Enfield (3 Enfields, a mix of 5 used cruisers and choppers) Now for a little diatribe!:eek1 It's Saturday. In the new scheme for weekends, this is the day most people have off from work, and it's the natural day for errands and shopping. Are the motorcycle shops open? No, 4 of the shops are closed. Only Honda is open. This is not such a big deal. There's always the joy of fighting late afternoon and early evening traffic on a work day. :huh But it is emblematic of the attitude here. The shops are ambivalent at best about accommodating pesky customers. Staying open on potentially the busiest day of the week? That would be too much to ask.
I was looking at an apartment above the Maserati dealer. Ferrari is on its way, and the building manager let slip that they were bringing in more motorcycle dealerships...Including KTM and Ducati! He didn't know when, and I planned to keep on him after I moved in. Well, today I learned my company denied my rent checks. Apparently a bunch of managers are being shipped out, and I have to wait and take one of their vacated places. I'm not exactly wild at the thought of another month at Stalag-13. He did say he didn't think the prices would be unreasonable, so a multistrada might be a consolation prize. If I hear anything more I'll post it here.
Thank you for documenting this! Out of the lot, I have had the best experience with Yamaha (Faizal) and Royal Enfield (Ani), maybe because they are riders themselves. These guys didn't mind opening the shop up just for me so I could come check out the bikes on a weekend. Been a year since they've been saying it. Ditto for Triumph. :ddog
PDO has the country covered by sat maps, plus there is the Off Road Exploer book that has maps in it. Other than that I find it's best just creating routes from Google Earth, loading them in the GPS and heading out. With a good sized fuel tank you''ll never be too far from a fuel station. As for places like the Wahibas - just load up a few key waypoints and have fun from one to the next. Not sure if you are on the OMX or Muscat Enduro mailing lists but I fancy the annual trip up Wadi Bani Awf to the cool heights sometime over the next couple of weekends.
Does anyone know the GPS coordinates of the new Yam service centre? Somewhere inthe bowles of Ghala I hear.
Don't have the GPS coordinates but been there twice. Next to Oman fisheries, behind a line of truck fabricators.
Hey guys. I started thinking about where to go during the August Eid holidays. I started looking at beaches but then I remembered I don't like them. So I started thinking about places I'd always wanted to go and living in Mexico, probably wouldn't get the chance to visit cheaply for a while. India needs visas which I object to on principle, and most other places that are a few hours flying away are places where my wife wouldn't approve of (whether because of safety or the presence of cute bar girls) So I started thinking about Nepal. I sent a couple of emails about motorcycle tours and here's the one response I've had so far (this was my preferred company as they have 250cc japanese enduro bikes. Everyone else is offering Royal Enfields. One company stated that breakdowns were part of the charm/adventure...nah): Day 01: Kathamndu - Chispani Over night at Tea house Day 02: Chispani Roheni Bhanjayang - Dhulikhel over night Day 03: Dhulikhel - Timal Besi via Palanchok Bhagawati - Dhulikhel Day 04: Dhulikhel - Namobudha - Balthali- Lakuribhanjang Day 05: Dhulikhel - Namo Bhddha - Dapcha - Dumja Dhulikhel- Back to Kathmandu. Cost: USD 1000.00 per person Cost includes: 1. Airport transfers as per the program 2. Accommodation in Kathmandu and in Dhulikhel. 3. Bike rentals including oil 4. A guide his allowances 5. Meals (3 meals a day) including 6. Necessary permits and local taxes Cost doesn't include: 1. Travel/ medical insurance 2. Emergency and Evacuation costs 3. Airport departures 4. Alcoholic beverages 5. Other personal expenses as laundry, telephone calls, tips etc. The price seems pretty good, and the return flight is about 180 OMR. It's rainy season so a view of Everest is rare, but the scenery will still be magnificent. So, anyone interested?
Stopped by the Honda dealer to have a look at the N700X. They are asking OMR 3,700 for it (about $2,000 more than the US). Had a sit on it and it's very, very different to my V-Strom. You can definitely feel its scooter heritage. In case anyone's interested, the finance terms are 20% down and 4 years. The bike salesmen were off, so I couldn't find out the interest rate. The ST1300 was OMR 6,500 as best I can recall. There were a few CBR 600/ fireblades, a 450 dirtbike and some naked N700S's.
Hi Im working out of Muscat for a couple of months, Probably try and catch up with some local ADV'er s for an intel swap. Anyone around on the 7th/8th? (fly in, medicals)
I'm currently in Muscat, would anyone be willing to bike swap me for mine in USA, or Peru? I can even pitch in some money just to borrow it for 1-3 days, just need to shoot some pictures driving around. I'm quite experienced and will take care of like my own. Here's my blog so you can see who I am. Or if anyone know where to rent on besides the harley dealership Thanks guys! www.Expeditionsouth.com
This is a great threat with lots of good information. I'm glad I found it. I'm currently in Germany, on a round-the-world trip. My wife just took a contract in Oman to teach, and I'll be leaving my bike in Europe - somewhere - and flying to Oman with her. I'm excited about riding this part of the world for a few months, before we both fly back to Europe and pickup where we left off here.
Hopefully you will be visiting in the winters. The summers here a bit harsh. Do give us a shout once here!
