hey guys, I'm hoping to drive Townsville to Brisbane on Sunday however the only actual road closure is this:

Bruce Highway, Midgee-Rockhampton Regional - is Closed to all vehicles due to water over road. The Bruce Highway is closed to all traffic at a number of locations between Miriam Vale and Rockhampton. Advice: Do not drive in flood waters. Last Reviewed: 25 Jan 2013 at 09:20. Next Update: 28 Jan 2013.

Can any locals to the area tell me if this is likely to have cleared by Sunday or if I should be taking the inland route? I have to make a stopover in Bundaberg, so would most likely head East at Rolleston... :ear

Yeh the weather in Bundy is likely to get worse over the weekend and ease after that, you might be better off going the inland track.we so far had about 130mm so far.:clap

Cool, so heading back to the coast via Bilo is ok?

latest report I got was this weather may go inland about the 100k mark but its hugging the coast for now, nothing is flooded at the moment around Bundy. So I'd say you might be lucky, further north I believe there is roads blocked .The inland track might the one I'd stay with.

I would wait a day or two if I was you, and definitely avoid inland roads.

I'm also currently stuck in townsville, but heading north (the roads juts opened up so I'll be leaving at dawn tomorrow).

I've been caught in this stuff a few times before and I wouldn't want to risk the inland highways. It's raining less but also needs less rain to flood, and there's a good chance you'll find yourself unable to go any further and not enough fuel to go back where you came from (or even worse, find out the river you crossed 30 minutes ago is now also flooded). Last time I rode through central QLD, I found a bridge under 10cm of water but too dangerous to cross (it was structurally damaged), and the recommended detour was about 7 hours of dirt road... which had not been checked by the council of course, so who knows if it's open or not?

Wait until that storm has gone south of your destination, and then check if the roads are open before leaving. :thumb

Thanks Bruce, yeh I think I'm going to avoid the risk of closures and go inland :

    Townsville > Charters Towers > Emerald > Roma > Toowoomba > Brissy

Was going to head to Dalby on Monday anyway so could just do what I needed to there and then visit family in Toowoomba Sunday night :D

I just got a message from him saying he was at the halfway point and it had been a good drive.

He has some parts of mine he is bringing down so I have been keeping an eye on the roads.

I got stuck at the same point a couple of years ago on the DR, but the road to Banana was still open so I went that way.

The engineer just cleared the bridge for trucks and 4wd's once ses get here to man some stop-go signs. Should make it to Roma tonight, does anyone know someone with a spare bed I could crash on there for the night? I'm a cheapskate so would probably just sleep in the car failing a free bed.
