About 6 months ago I heard about a anti-fog mask that attached to the inside of the helmet... no squirt and rub chemicals required. I was... "skeptical". Got home this evening and found the Jan. issue of Motorcyclist in the mail, and as usual, did a quick thumb through... low and behold, they had tested one and determined that it all but eliminated shield foging. The staff gave it a rating of 5 'H'... what ever the hell that means. I'm always looking for "something better" in this area... the best rub-on product I've found to date is the FogTech wipes. One application and they last for several days in the funkiest weather Washington has to offer, but as with most chemicals, there is a degree of distortion and on-comming light flairing. As it turns out, the mask is now being imported into the US by Street & Competition... so I ordered one. For $16 bucks... what the hell. Anyway... the Respro Foggy Mask is available in assorted colors from: http://streetandcomp.com/ Creep
give it a shot guy and let us know. are you going to use it in a fixed or flipup helmet? looks simple, but I use a flipup because of presc glasses and it looks like it'd hit them ... but hey I thought I was wrong once, turned out I wasn't, but was
I have a fog city shield. If you haven't tried this, I highly recommend it. I have never had a problem after putting this thing on.
Hi n00b... welcome to the asylum. I have tried everything made since the first Bell Star over 30 years ago... including fog city shields. They work fine on Quantums and such, but they suck on an XD... to much distortion because of the shield curvature. A little tip... fill out the rest of your public profile. No one will ever take you seriously if you leave it blank. Creep
I have to agree with him on the Fog City insert. They make a photosensitive one as well. Work great!!
Another for Fogtech (and I've tried everything)... I use it on my eye glasses. Only problem I find is that it will collect enough dust by the days end to impair vision. I've got the Nolan fog insert (I believe same material as fogcity) so no probs with the visor. I do have a Respro mask but haven't used it yet since I'm not crazy about the idea of leaving an open air channel down the front of neck, chin and mouth in below freezing weather. But I'll have to give it a whirl when it get real cold.
i just got the photot sensitive last week so i don thav emany miles on it, but it does not fog and it does change color, i would like it to be a little darker in full sunlight, but i find that i still dont have to squint at all so it works well, it just seem slike it would work better if it was darker but it doestn really need to be. charlie
FYI - The Nolan anti-fog insert (which attaches only to Nolan helmets) seems to work significantly better than Fog City fog shields.
Cool idea - just ordered one I'm curious to see how thick it is & weather or not it'll work with a pair of goggles & the Arai XD in dirt-mode for cold-weather offroad stuff - not for anti-fog, but keeping your nose from freezing... Regardless, it'll be nice to keep the shield down in the rain...
Same deal inte... but not real concerned about goggles. I don't really have any major dust issues, but how it will fit in an XD, reduce/eliminate fogging and keeping my chin warm are biggies. I wear an MSR "masque" to keep the chin/mouth/nose from freezing over right now (something you may want to look at if the Respro doesn't do it for you), and FogTech on the shield... but off-road, the FogTech really is a dust magnet. They don't make a FogCity for the XD shield. The FogCity for the Simpson Bandit actually fits an XD pretty good, but... the extreme curvature of the XD shield and FogCity combined make for some really serious distortion issues, so I don't recommend it. Taker easy inte... Creep
I've got a thin balaclava I use, but this Respro thing seems like it would be a lot less hassle to deal with for use on a daily basis - I'm sure the balaclava I use would fit right under thing thing for a little extra warmth - it's really thin. One of the guys I was taking photos of in Baja had a deal that looked similar - a deal that covered his nose & mouth, but was used with goggles - and it wasn't the racer-type hard plastic nose protector ... have to track that guy down & find out what that thing was. Either way I'll probably end up trying this thing in the dirt, just to see ... I'm probably a worse dust collector than any accessory could be ...
Somthing from here perhaps? http://schampa.com/item.asp?iid=19 I use the "Hanibal," it's windstopper fleece and one of my most critical pieces of gear for winter riding. [subsequent edit: 12/14] the Schampa is for warmth and sealing the bottom of my helmet from cold air.... it does nothing to prevent fogging.
I use an KBC VR-X snowcross helmet in winter, which has a breath guard mask installed in it. It also has a strip of aluminum that can be pinched around the nose for a good seal, and it allows the breath to escape below along the neck line, instead of letting it fog up the shield. And it works great! Combined with the dual-faceshield setup on the KBC, it completely eliminates fogging in cold weather. This helmet basically includes all the cold weather riding features from the get-go. Thanks for pointing out the separate mask solution. If I didn't already have my VR-X helmet, I would certainly put together a combination of the FogCity visor insert and this mask that you found. It looks like that company, Respro, also makes a very interesting rain suit that fits tightly over the racing leathers. I'll probably give that a try next season. Thanks! -- Ilya
I tried the mask in question this morning, and found it uncomfortable because it pinches my nose somewhat to achieve a tight seal. This forces me to breathe mostly through my mouth. Now, I have been called a mouth-breathing troglodyte before, but i don't care to resemble that remark on purpose. Also, the mask makes removing the helmet much more difficult. My Fog City shields work well enough that I'll stick with them. Cheers, Tom See my amended opinion on page four of this thread...
Hi Creep, thanks for the advice, and the welcome - just figuring this stuff out. Felt kinda obvious to me about the shield, but thought I might offer it up anyway.
I ordered one yesterday..I've been using the fog city liner for awhile but it doesn't help with my glasses Living in the PNW and wearing glasses just sucks..I'm looking forward to this bit of equipment wirking
I tried them in the cold/wet and they do supress fogging but they cause a strange, multicolored halo-type effect around lights that reminded me of an MSG allergy. I couldn't take it, but I will readily admit that it's better than not being able to see at all.
My Arai TourCross came with a soft rubber fog shield. Is Arai Americas not shipping these with the XDs? Also got an extra set of shield screws, and painted caps to use when faceshield is removed, FWIW.
