Bad news. The local Austrian dealer ATP Majer does not find the filter in the official sales program so I sent him a picture and description. He e-mailed Mahle in Germany and also submitted the picture of the filter. In parallel he e-mailed another company and asked if they have a substitute or equivalent. I liked the line saying " I really want to help the bikers getting the part for an acceptable price!" So finally ATP in Austria tried to help but unfortunately Mahle (Mrs. Simone Lang) replied that this filter is not available through the aftermarket sales program. Sorry guys. However, a famous German Motorcycle Magazine has asked readers to send information about overpriced parts or parts which are not available as spare parts. Llike the filter or waterhoses from KTM requiring to buy the whole thermostat. I have to try to find which magazine it was and I will send them the issue. But I really doubt it will help. A letter to BMW will most probably not even reach the responsible persons Cheers Steve
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=730020 We really need to try and get all the fuel pump / filter information together. I've been running an external filter for a while now, same setup as guzzimike. One thing to be carefully of is most car efi filters are designed to run larger diameter fuel lines than the bike is fitted with. My original fuel line split after about 3 months, which was not good. So I've now replaced all efi hoses.
Great information coming out of this thread. I will look into the filter issue and see how much trash comes out. Thanks for all the work. I am not above some creative enginnering to make a permanent fix. BMW.... Ich werden nicht den wucher preis bezahlen !!!
I replaced the pump because I thought at the time that it was the problem, however, if you do find the filter full of crap, it would be a good bit of research to just replace the filter and see if that solves the problem. I connected my old pump up to 12v after I removed it, and it seemed to work fine.
Took the fuel pump assembly out to see what it looked like. the main pump filter was laying on the bottom of the tank. Took the filter out and blew back through. Not much came out. Soaked it with carberator cleaner and blew it out again, some brown came out with the carb cleaner. Put back together and started right up ????
I will need to take the bike out and see what happens. What is the next step ? will see if the same problem occurs. How many bikes have had this same issue ?
Same issue. bike with 56,000 km. pulled out the pump assembly, removed the fuel filter which was effectively clogged!! Did the same mod as OP, replaced by an external filter. temporary repair though because here in the middle of nowhere at the border of Brazil and Venezuela, can't find appropriate filter nor 1/4" fuel line. Used temporarily a pressure air/water hose. Tested the bike and is now running fine. Hopefully mod will last until I reach Caracas where I can find appropriate filter and hose.
well might be, although it looked 1/4 to the eye. just checked the hose on the bike it says " FUEL 6 x 11 BMW " I may have wrongly assumed 6mm ID, 11mm OD
I'd be pretty sure that's the right size, and 6mm is just slightly less than 1/4" so a 1/4" hose and filter should work. My question then is if anybody's found a filter with that size inlet/outlet that is made to work with fuel injection (high pressure). The only ones I find that size are the cheap plastic or glass filters that are made only for low pressures (carbs). I'd bet there is a auto filter for some european or japanese model cars that would fit the bill, but I have no idea how to find that.
Check out Russell filters: I am looking at using one of these but only 40 micron size filters. http://www.russellperformance.com/mc/fuel/filters-comp.shtml I think we need 10 micron which they have in the other series of filters but they are larger. You can buy barbed 1/4" x NTP fittings for each end. But the larger Pro filters are hard to tuck away due to size: http://www.russellperformance.com/mc/fuel/filters-pro.shtml
somebody had posted this, but expensive <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="2" width="720"><tbody><tr><td rowspan="3" width="411">Mini and Super Mini Reusable Filters Form and function After success with our first fuel filter, we at GS Performance made a decision to manufacture new fuel filters for the High Performance Motorcycle and Go Kart Industries, and today we have the best billet, stainless steel, washable, reusable and performance fuel filters in those two industries. I also found that one http://www.jpcycles.com/product/7200330 the sales tech on chat told me it is good for 50 psi and it is approx 10 microns... for $6.99 I'll try that
That sounds intriguing.... It would be great if you could doc. the install, as this is a great price....
That JPCycles product is made by Russell Peformance and they are for carbed bikes only! Beware!!! See manufacturers web site and they have other models for fuel injection filters. These small ones are not made to handle 50 psi: http://www.russellperformance.com/mc/fuel/filters-street.shtml On another note we can make these work from Russell and they only have a 40 micron filter option: http://www.russellperformance.com/mc/fuel/filters-comp.shtml I can't find any 10 micron 50 psi rated compact fuel filters!
Looks like maybe the Holley will do the trick - see page 5 #162-550 1.5" diameter x 3.5" long... Rated as post filter for EFI systems with replaceable filter... ??? http://www.holley.com/162-550.asp or http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-162-550/overview/
This Holley filter does look like the best option I've seen so far. As long as you can get 1/4" barbed fittings for each end. Guess I'll try a search for "3/8"NPT to 1/4" barb", and see where that gets me.
Thanks JRWooden! Great find. I will go with the Holly for a compact 10 micron EFI fuel filter. Barbed fittings for 3/8" NPT are very common. Nice replaceable filter and o-ring system as well. I think I can also fit one on my berg as well.
No problem glad I thought to check there.... I don't have any troubles yet ... but have long long ride planned for in the spring .... I'm starting to compile the list of crap I should do before I leave .... at 30K miles I'm wondering if "ripping out OEM filter and installing the Holley should be on the list ..... " I never hear of folks having to replace FI-fuel-filters on cars ... even after 10 times the volume of gas has gone through them that we use ... HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY CUT OPEN ONE OF THE OEM UNITS? It looks plenty big in terms of "loading capacity" but maybe its just a small crappy filter in a big can?
