Melbourne to Alice Springs via the Simpson

Heading off Friday

I am heading off on Friday with my mate Rupert to the Simpson Desert. I'm riding a DRZ 400, Rupert has chosen the awesome power of his TTT 250 (now 340). We are intending to cross on the French Line. Has anyone been up there in the last few weeks?

Anyway a ride report will follow. You can expect a hard fought crash of the day competition, a sedate pace from the TTR (aka The Japanese Ladies Bike) and very little chance of actually reaching Alice.

Bogan chic

We had planned to meet at Southbank BMW at 2pm. True to form Rupert turned up late with no fuel or oil in his bike. Furthermore, he appeared to have raided an op shop to secure his riding gear - think bogan chic and you will get the picture. He abandoned his filthy TTR on the pavement (leaking the last of its oil) and dived into the very upmarket BMW dealership to get oil. They could not get the biker tramp out of there fast enough.

Having filled up with oil and fuel we were finally on our way. After a short drag on the highway to get out of the city we were off the main roads and onto some interesting riding. The good news was that since converting his TTR 250 to 320cc it can now almost reach three figure speeds ( and only seems to leak 1 or 2 litres of oil every 100 km or so). The riding through Weribee Gorge was fabulous and by accident I seemed to have found some outstanding grass farming tracks. We called it a day at 5.45 in Lake Baloc. Dinner in the hotel and a romantic night for two in the motel.
