Bavaria - Austria - 4th Gap
Hi all,
next round of the "Bavaria - Austria" Session. At the 3rd story MojaveGS wanted some "Oberammergauer", so we did some Oberammergau today (and a bit more). All our stories have a .gpx file. Here's the todays. Leutasch.gpx First we left Penzberg direction Murnau. Had the idea to use small roads. You must know it is not easy to find the very small ones, because the most are forbidden for use with cars and bikes. But we found one. :-) easy off-road ![]() the other direction ![]() But it was only a small one. Not very long. After a km the tarmac had us back. But it still was a nice route - alps come closer. Some views ![]() and this ![]() Next small road took us into some forest-roads. No "forbidden" sign. (There was some when we hit the next road). Next stop was lake Staffelsee at Murnau. Looks like this. ![]() Watching the tourists and the ducks for a while. Enjoyed the sun. Now it was time to go on. The road close to the first montains of the alps takes us via Bad Kohlgrub to To YEAH - Oberammergau. Town of Passion-Festival Here some pics. Typical tratitional painted house ![]() the church ![]() another house ![]() in the "city" ![]() ![]() ![]() a gift shop ![]() more ![]() even Tina found the right stuff ![]() and we found the place of the festival. ![]() ![]() ![]() Our view of Oberammergau so far. :-) MojaveGS - hope we hit your expectation. When we left the town dircection Ettal. A few meters outside the town was a parking. A place for two more pics. This one ![]() and this one ![]() We moved on through Ettal (see report #2) and down to the main-road to get to Garmisch. Short before the Farchant-tunnel we left the main road. On this warm and sunny day we wont use the tunnel. View to the Zugspitze ![]() Then we entered Garmisch. And here you can find a nice spot with a great view. Wank-Cable Station - view over Garmisch ![]() Funny, special for you guys from the US. The name of the montain is "Wank" -- so you can see, germans are high wankers, they have a Wank-room and a Wank-restaurant. Wank, Wank, Wank - how to wank ![]() One the other side - the Zugspitze - Germans highest. ![]() Enough wanking. We left Garmisch - passed the ski stadium (yesterday they have blown the ski-jump-tower to build a new one for 2008) - and went on the main touristic road direction Mittenwald. A smaller road on the right we used, because less traffic. It takes you to this little lake. Karwendel-View ![]() Then we passed Mittenwald. At the end of the town a small road takes you to the Leutasch-valley and to Austria. In the middle of the Leutasch. ![]() more ![]() and ![]() Realy nice - even for walking. Some km later we are at the "backside" of the Zugspitze and the valley gets wider. We take the road to Seefeld another ski-resort in Austria. We stopped at a little lake near the end of town. The lake ![]() more ![]() and ![]() Today we won't go down to Inntal so we decided to go left at the main-road. Quick we passed Mittenwald again and then get right to my favorite road which brought us to the lake Walchensee. Man - i love this lake. ![]() Others too ![]() The road follows the lake for a while. At the other end it goes up ..... Last view at Walchensee ![]() ![]() .... and then down to lake Kochelsee. View to Kochelsee from the parking half the way down ![]() This road has this sign ![]() This is the price german bikers have to pay. Too many crashes with bikes. So the road is blocked for going up on weekends. You are only allowed to go down. (i think 75€ is the ticket to go up -- and be sure - the police waits for you). Lake Kochel - only some more km to reach home. So this was our tour today - hope you enjoyed it. have fun Andreas + Bettina. the other tours can be found here: the 3rd -- http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=220231 the 2nd -- http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219704 the 1st -- http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218135 my homepage (in german only) www.alienhardt.de my other bike-project: www.atic-meeting.org

What a blast. I was stationed in (West) Germany when I was in the Army, and your photos bring back a lot of memories.
The woodcarving of Oberammergau is also an amazing specialty of the town, aside from the Passion Play and the painted houses. There are houses painted with scenes form Old World fairy tales, Puss in Boots, Little Red Riding Hood, etc. After I left the service, I returned with my father and we were treated to a personal tour of the Passion Play theatre. We got to see all the set pieces, costumes, props, etc. Quite a treat. I'd love to motor around over there for a month or so. Soon...

Vielen Dank. Ich vermisse Deutschland, besonders Bayern.
Oberammergauer and GAP in a one day trip. I am very jealous. I was stationed in Augsburg and GAP and use to make the trip between the two all the time.

Hi all,
@Gadget Boy: Good idea, maybe i should sent the Bavarian tourist bureau a "donate-me" Button. @SgtMarty: great, i hope you can make it soon. I think it is a rare thing to see all the passion stuff, because the festival is played only once all 10 years. @MojaveGS: time to come back for a visit ;-) It's good to hear that you guys from "Overseas" (in my point of view-direction ;-)) have so many good memories about your time in germany. (as i know that sometimes it is not easy for us-soldiers in this country). Thank you all for your kind comments. You force us to go on with our reports. Just thiniking about north bavaria (my roots) and east - we will see. Andreas + Bettina
