GPS mount

Any advice on the best mount for Garmin III+? I would like to mount it on a KLR 650.

I like RAM handlebar mounts. Relatively inexpensive (~$20usd). Uses a ballmount/thumbscrew that is solid and very easy to adjust/remove. Attach the GPS to your favorite RAM flat plate with dual lock velcro stuff and a zip-tie and away you go!

Oh, btw, welcome to the asylum!

Why use a flat plate and velcro?

The RAM GPSIII mount is pretty good, even has a hole for the Garmin thumbscrew.

Only issue I've had is that dirt builds up in the mount, and vibes cause that dirt to scuff the case a bit. Boo hoo.

I didn't realize there was a specific RAM mount for the GPSIII...I'll have to go have a look. The mount for the Streetpilot was quite lame, utilizing the two little 6-32 screws that hold the stock plastic mount on. I stripped one of them the first time I tried to install it. Feh. Can't strip big velcro.

Got it. Definitely better than the SP mount. $39.

Here's the lame SP mount:

check out www.cycoactive.com for the touratech mount for the gps II, III, III+ and V. I have the MvG mount that i use on a r80gs and ktm adventure--have been very impressed with it and like the idea of better vibration dampening

M.A.P. Engineering has some decent units for crossbar and handlebar mounting. I've seen them and they are nicely made. I had excellent experience with Jim (Mr. M.A.P.) when I bought several items from him a few years ago.

Here's one, in place on an Adventurous-looking machine:

The web site features some photos with dirty bikes, too:

On a somewhat similar note, I have my GPSIII+ wired to be on all the time even if the bike's ignition key is off. But occasionally the unit will turn off while I'm refueling or have the bike turned off for some reason. Any ideas why this would happen? I haven't noticed at what point it turns off. I just notice it's off when I go to get under way.

Eek

I'm not claiming it to be vibe proof, but I've got my power cord zip tied to some little eyelet on the RAM mount, and it's held there pretty well.

Another note, you can have the touratech mount on a RAM arm...

For my use and budget the RAM was/is the way to go.

Once again, Mr. Blume is absolutely correct. I agree 100%.
