Animated gifs ... aren't.
So I've been lurking here for a while and noticed something strange. When I'm browsing during down time at work, all the animated smilies and avatars on this site work fine. However, when I'm at home, the animations, well, aren't.
Then a few nights ago, I installed an update to Zone Alarm Pro on my home PC. I didn't reboot right away after the update and I noticed that the animations worked! After I rebooted and Zone Alarm was started back up, the animations didn't work anymore. I dug around in the program and found an option that turns off animated ads and pop-ups. I disabled this option and the animations were back. To turn off this feature, open the ZoneAlarm program window, then go to Privacy->Main. In the Ad Blocking area, drag the slider to Off. Mine was set to Medium, which supposedly blocks pop-up, pop-under, and animated ads. As far as I could tell, it only blocked the animations on this site. I still got pop-unders at MSNBC and weather.com among others. I use the Google toolbar to block pop-ups and it works well. I just thought I'd post this in case anyone else was wondering why they still don't see the animations after they've made sure all of their browser options are set correctly. Thanks for posting that. I sometimes get asked why our smilies don't animate and I just say, duh..., ah dunno, they animate on my machine.
