Best place to list a Duc 999s online?

My brother wants to sell one of his Ducatis, the really fast one, and lower his insurance bill about two and a half tons. Who knows, maybe I can get him over to the dirty side of the planet with the proceeds.

Any suggestions on where/how to ferret out actual buyers for a 1995 999s with under 5000 miles? We live in Albuquerque, so there are a limited number of potential buyers here who have that kind of scratch.

I mentioned Ebay as an option, and I dug up ducati.ms and ducatispot.com as sites that advriders refer to. Any comparisons between sites by those who have sold hot sportbikes would be appreciated. Thanks. Dan

Craigslist is the way to go and its free. I sold 3 bikes on CL and everytime the first person to see the bike bought it.

Also put the ad in the flea market area of this site.

Speedzilla or Ducati.ms

Ebay is the only serious place to sell a bike in my experience (I've sold more than a dozen online in the past 4 years.) Putting them anywhere else will get you lots of compliments (nice bike, what kind of pipes are those, etc) and perhaps a few offers to trade. But Ebay will get you buyers.

You should research shipping a bit before you list the bike on ebay, and make sure you take plenty of really good photos. Also be sure to respond quickly to any questions from potential buyers, and look at what other similar machines have sold for recently.

Good luck!

Hey GasGas...
I wasn't focused on ebay so it's good to hear that it works. We definitely need a national audience - I'd guess less than one chance in three to sell it at a good price in Albuquerque. I'll talk to my brother and see what he thinks.
I think I could help him deal with ebay pretty well - I don't sell a lot but I've done it successfully with a whole variety of lesser pieces from gun barrels to art prints. But the devil's in the details. Soooo....

How do you set up your reserve for bikes - like do you ever use a low reserve to get bidding going, or do you just keep it up at your lowest price to let it go? Any other methods beyond have good photos and descriptions? Thanks!

There are lots of different ways to deal with pricing the bike. Everyone has a number in their mind of what they'd like to get ideally; but there's the market reality to consider. What has always worked for me is to price the bike slightly lower than other bikes of the same type which are not as desirable.

Here's an example: let's say there is a stock 2005 999 with 5000 miles with a Buy It Now for $10000, and bidding is up to $8900. Let's say my bike has pipes, rearsets, adjustable bars and only 3000 miles on it. I'll put my bike up with a Buy It Now for $9200, and usually, it will be snapped up pretty fast by one of the people bidding on the other bike. Of course that's assuming that $9200 is a number that works for me.

One of the big mistakes people make on ebay is not looking at the recent selling prices of similar bikes. You have to realize that although your bike is special to you, there are lots of others on ebay, and people will compare. Looking at the competition will give you the perspective you need to price the bike correctly.

Lastly, if you have very low feedback on ebay, or haven't been a member for that long, this can scare buyers away, so ideally you'll have a seller account which didn't get established too recently.

Good luck!

It's obviously a more targeted website, as it's 100% bike focused. But your bike gets mixed in with a lot of dealer listings, usually several pages down when you search. You get way more eyeballs (i.e. potential buyers) using ebay, so your bike sells quicker. If you aren't in a hurry, Cycle Trader is fine, as long as you're OK with your bike being on there for a while.

The "auction" aspect of ebay encourages sales, as there is a finite amount of time a listing will be available.

sure that's not an '05? 999 came out in 2003.

ducatimonster.org has a pretty active bikes for sale sections and is a great place for ducati stuff in general. Also free to list.

D'uh of course it's an '05. As usual I'm living in the wrong century, either that or deep down I have a hard time believing people buy bikes that new - I'm one of those guys who throws a new pair of jeans in the corner for a couple of months until they age in. Drives my wife nuts, but then again, what doesn't?

I got a great range of ideas to offer up - appreciate the thoughts, guys. -Dan
