German Space Agency Mission
This has just come in from a friend in Germany:
"According to an unnamed source DARA (German Space Agency) has announced it's own plans for manned Mars exploration. DARA has combined scientific and engineering forces with BMW and propose sending a new generation R1200GS Adventure to the surface of Mars in search of signs of water and possible life. Apparently the new generation boxer motor can adapt to varying fuel grades and atmospheres with a simple installation of a new plug in code. The lighter weight of the new GS meets the limited payload capacity of the French Renault launch vehicle (rocket) and will allow a rider to accompany the new GS. A human rider has been selected to reduce reliance upon the computers that had originally been outsourced to Lucas of England in the spirit of the European unity, and also be present in case the fuel enrichener needs to be utilized. DARA's original concerns of surging have been rendered moot by BMW engineers who have stated that there is no surging in the atmosphere of Mars and would require empirical evidence before addressing the issue. The BMW R1150GS was selected due to the aforementioned fuel adaptability, the lighter weight, and an excuse to use BMW's immense advertising budget to debut the new Adventure model to promote the German Space program. Also mentioned but not confirmed is a BMW advertising program that may use the mission as a cornerstone of future advertising unless the mission vehicle goes awry. In that event it is assumed that BMW will announce that the vehicle was operated improperly and would need to be ridden back to the original dealer for warranty review (it is assumed by many insiders that the warranty period will have lapsed by the time the vehicle is returned). DARA and BMW are now searching for candidates for the rider. The trip will most certainly be one way (unless warranty probelms arise and BMW demands inspection of the vehicle) but the opportunity to be the debut rider of such a marvelous machine in such a pristine environment is sure to attract many applicants. BMW is rumored to be favoring the top place finisher of the Dakar Rally riding a KTM.
I'll send more info as I get it.
If you flail to plan, you plan to fail
If you plain to flan, you fail to flail
If you plan to fail, you fail a plan
Oh hell, wing it!
