Tall Grass Prairie DS ride.

In Northeast Oklahoma we have a nature preserve known as the Tall grass prairie. There is many herds of wild buffalo and wild horses in this area. We are blessed with miles and miles of gravel roads. A great area for dual sporting. The Trans am Trail goes through this area. We took a little ride up there this morning. Conditions were ideal. We had just enough rain to keep the dust down and the temperature cool. We started off with five KTM's and one KLR however a mechanical gremlin got one the brand new KTM's before were even a mile from the house. One of the other KTM riders went back with him to make sure he made it ok. The other four riders ventured on and had a great ride and found a really cool little Mexican restaurant for lunch. I posted some pics on our local club (Tulsa trail riders) web site. Here is a link to it.

A Possible Moment of Serendipity

Yo FotoBo,

Before I disgorge, I wanted to verify that you are posting about Scipio, OK: N35"03.256 W95' 57.361.

I aquired my KLR in '03, and in early '04 I rode a "Roots Discovery" ride into OK. My Ol' Man was (officially) born in Scipio, OK November 1924, a mere 17 years after converting from Indian Territory to Statehood. The "Dad" was raise by my Greatgrandmother in Hanna, OK while my Grandfather was in Alaska. (Hanna, OK: N35' 12.297 W95' 53.492; one paved road when I was a kid).

Scouting out Scipio in '04, I noticed a conical hill southeast of 'town', probably an ancient lava vent; a leftover from the western edge of the Oachita Mountains. This was at a time that was pre-digital camera for me, so I regret not having a postable pic. But, as I rode by, I knew this was "Sacred Ground".

In '04, Scipio was only a small 'burg, with a hut as a humorous Post Office. Apparently, a lot has happened since my ride, as I found that the roads led into town, but dead ended into ranches & the Canadian River.

Call me crazy, but I think I like the open plains more than anything else!

I like the Tulsa Ride forum!

Scipio is about 90 miles south and east of Tulsa. Tallgrass prairie preserve is about the same distance northwest of Tulsa. The preserve is close to the Kansas border in Osage county. Straight north out of Pawhuska.

Funny your should mention Scipio. Our club the Tulsa Trail Riders owns 1700 acres there. It is a riding park that is open to the public. The town hasn't grown much. There is a church and a small grocery there. If you are talking about the hill I am thinking about, there is a house on top of it now.

Several years ago we leased some property in Hanna for a riding area. We eventually lost the lease and then bought the property in Scipio from the Recreational Trails act fund.

I agree about the open plains. They have there own kind of beauty. It was really beautiful up there yesterday.

If you ever get back this way I would be glad to show you around. I ride a KLR also.
