16 tooth sprocket

So, I was at my local dealer the other day chatting with the parts person explaining why I have ordered 2k worth of parts from the U.S and not them. She asked me what I still needed for my bike, so I starting going through the list...

heated grips
rear plate
new foot pegs
skid plate
cans

but I really don't want to buy any of this from them due to the huge difference in pricing. So, as a token, I said... "Well, give me a 16 tooth sprocket today and work on your pricing and 3rd party suppliers".

So, brought my sprocket home and installed it today. HOLY CRAP!!!!

If you are going to do anything to your bike, do this FIRST!!!
I really didn't think my bike was twitchy, but any that may have been there is gone when running under 30kph.

throttle response in 1st and 2nd are excellent. I spent a couple hours just riding around town and my only though is.... geeezzzz, why isn't this factory standard?

I know many have preached this same tune, but I thought I'd just re-enforce it. For the $30 or so, best upgrade I can imagine.

Yup. It's the way to go. I did it on my 950 and liked it so much that when I got my 990 I had them put one on before I picked it up! No way was I riding with that 17 any more than I had to.

Another option is to put a 45 tooth rear with the 17. It is almost the same as the 16/42. The reason being if you are going to do some technical offroad you can install the 16 and have a raped ape on your hands. The 16 is a good start but when it comes time for a new chain and sprokets its something to think about. I've also heard that there is less wear on your chain with a 17. Dont know how true that is but I do know on my 300 a larger front sprocket,14 vs 13, helps with suspension action. Not as choppy. Food for thought.

When i changed chain and sprockets this winter i went for 16/45 and bought an extra 17 to put on if im going to do any longer trip with mostly tarmac.

That combined with a H2W jetting kit sure made the bike alot more fun.
