tracking a bigdog through a flood zone, another Wisconsin ride!

This here ride report involves quite a cast of characters, as you will soon see. A few weeks ago, Dirty Dave and I rode the northern portion of a route I came up with that we dubbed the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail.

This report caused alot of interest in the route I had came up with and alot of people asked for the GPS tracks, the problem was is that the file I came up with didn't work on alot of people GPS's.

One night I got a call from my friend Mark, A.K.A. bigdogadventures.com and he said he wanted to ride the route soon and would test out the tracks for me. I was all for it, but heck, if Big Dog was riding through your neighborhood, wouldn't you want to join him? well, I went and recruited my pal Tom ( hipster ) to join in on the fun and we picked a date. Unfortunately, as it turned out that date didn't work with bigdogs trip so he had to ride it mostly solo.

Since Tom and I had to plan ahead to do this trip, we both had asked for time off work, and by god, we were going to ride something!! I knew bigdog had the track thing down so I really didn't need to ride the route again, but I guess I wanted to be one of the first to complete the FULL route. I got another message from Cannonshot and he said he would work on the track too, and what he did was amazing, he made the track so it would work, made an autoroute and added in a ton of waypoints for gas and camping. I figured the proper thing to do would be to run the track and see if it worked out good with what was actually out there. I made a few more requestes to a couple of advriders and got another person to join in on the ride.

Now we get another obstacle thrown in.. a FLOOD!! Bigdog barely made it through before the bad weather hit, we'd be following his tracks through the state.

Yes, old mother nature sure was pissed at us and unleashed her furry on us. It sure was sad to see and hear about all the damage that occured in the midwest. When I looked at the weather forecast, it looked like we were going to get another dose of bad weather but we figured we'd try to run as much of the route as possible. Our third rider, Elmer a.k.a. willnevergrowup wasn't able to join us til Friday so Tom and I set out on our own.

We made a pit stop at a car wash to make sure we had everything stashed and out of the rain.

We stopped at a fast food joint and made a big wet mess out of the place.

We eventually made it to the official start of my route, the Illinois / Wisconsin border.

The point of beginning for my route was also the start of something else!!

Toms gloves were a little wet!

The first part of my route goes through Wisconsins historic lead mining area.

next up, a tourist trap and flood damage!

We made our way through the town of Dickeyville and decided to stop in at the Dickeyville Grotto.

The Dickeyville Grotto was built by Father Mathius Wernerus, the pastor of Dickeyville's Holy Ghost Parish, from 1920 to 1930. It was renovated between 1995 and 1997.

I wonder how they found all this stuff to add to this shrine?

OK, enough of this, lets get back on the road, heck it stopped raining for a seconds, lets roll!

The Platte river was quite full

another break in Cassville before we hit some of the really fun stuff.

All the rain and flood waters eventually had to end up in the Mississippi and this campground was being evacuated. Alot of the campers were moved up onto the road.

Good-N-uff hollow road is a blast

Glen Haven Wisconsin is a pretty cool, rustic town.

This is an often photographed location, Dugway road.

A big landslide had been recently cleaned up.

A lot of these are around!

Getting close!

I can't imagine the force it takes to create this!

Toms LC4 was acting up, seemed like an electrical problem. After some messing around with the vent hose and a full tank of gas, the bike seemed to run better.

Just south of Soldiers Grove Wisconsin, it used to be a field full of crops.

Almost a week later and the water is still very high!

This poor guy lost one of his claws and wasn't too happy about it!

Big Dogs bridge didn't fair too well in the flood!

Toms sweet LC4

Unfortunately, Toms bike problems resurfaced and he decided to head home. I sure wish you could have joined us for the rest of the trip, the weather was great!!

Ernie on some sweet doubletrack

Ernie learned that if he came around a corner and saw me sitting there, he had better be careful, there was a reason I had stopped and that was to take a picture of him in some tough section.

I realized that we were going to be late meeting Elmer, so I made a phone call and said we'd be there as soon as possible. He didn't mind we were late, and thats good because we were over and hour late!!

Elmer has a sweet 950!

After a few miles on long fast gravel roads, we hit the P-town ATV trail.

Then back on the gravel forest roads, we still have a LONG ways to go!!

Cool fire tower

Looks like fun!

but the sign says no climbing, so I didn't

a little pit stop at Big Falls park. I really like this place.

Tick Haven, I'd believe that!

This guy was trying to cross in a designated area, but I though he needed a little help.

I don't think he is too happy!

I moved the turtle to a safe spot off the road and we kept going, only to be stopped by a bunch of Geese in the road.

Typical northern Wisconsin view.

I came to a water crossing and about halfway through, I saw a big snapping turtle in my way.

This was HIS road, and didn't want anyone to cross.

He was ornry! I went to take his picture and he bit me!

You can get going at a pretty good clip on these roads, but you gotta be aware of these things jumping in front of you!
