Father-Son ride SW Colorado's San Juan Mountains

Father-Son ride late June 2008 in SW Colorado's San Juan Mountains.

THURSDAY-FRIDAY:

Preparing the F-650's and trailer in Baton Rouge LA...

Fresh Conti's...

After 2 days trailering the F650's through LA, TX, AZ and CO, my son Alex and I finally make it to Lake City, Colorado for a week of riding as little asphalt as possible, hiking and camping. For those South Texas Adventure Riders reading along, Lake City is right next to the same Rio Grande River, but it's much prettier (and cleaner) up here in Colorado...prairies, pine forests, snow capped peaks...

Arriving at the Silver Spur Hotel late Friday:

SATURDAY:

The plan is to load up the bikes with all the gear and head out west over Engineer Pass, do a little hiking and camp out somewhere along the way down to Silverton.

Preparing the bikes:

The ride up from Lake City to Engineer Pass:

Wasnt'expecting this much snow...

Last few switchbacks...

Arrival at Engineer Pass:

A short hike up one of the summits near Engineer:

The ride down the western side of Engineer was a bit harder than expected... but we made it without a fall...

Down by Mineral Point looking for a place to camp,

relax,

deal with the effects of altitude sickness,

and wait for the sunset. Here's a view of the campsite way in the distance:

More to come...

Good start. The only sad part of this story is that I did not come along.

Keep it coming!

Beautiful pictures of a great area. Pulled my DR350se up there behind my Buick in '98 and had a great time exploring that area.
Thanks for sharing your trip. Waiting for the next installment now

Friday Report

Friday report.

A room with a view:

Packing up the 650's. One last look at American Basin before turning around and heading back home...

The rig after the long trek back to Baton Rouge. The rain cleaned the 650's a bit...

Thumb Trailer

Great article and photos!! My son lives in the San Juans and this is a trip we want to take. I also have two F650GS and want to know the brand of your trailer and where you purchased it? I'm looking for something lightweight to tow behind my truck and camper. Pros and cons......Would you buy it again?

Many thanks,

PeakSeeker
