Laugh Yup, one more TAT'le tale folks....

Or how two Flatistaner's try to conquer the TAT while it proofs to have a bite as well........
The Flatistaner dudes are Sanjoh and myself, Rider1150Gsadv.
I left my parent's house (Ft. Likkertail) on June 26Th at 10 AM for my trip to (B)Orlando to meet up with Sanjoh.
Due to a ABS warning light coming on, I had to detour to the BMW dealer to get that fixed... Yeah right....
I ended up at Sanjoh's digs and crashed for the night. The next day while John was at work, I installed some extra lights on his bike and fixed the dented ABS sensor ring causing the ABS warning light to come on.. Dealer had the bike hooked up to the computer and I happen to see the issue while on the phone with parental units... So much for computers.

Tiger unit...

GS unit...

We left B-orlando at about 2:30 PM as Sanjoh's bike needed a caliper pin replaced that proved to be more stuborn than anticipated...
The weather at that point was horrible as we ran into a downdraft, hail, lightning, rain and bad traffic around Gainsville FL.
Somehow we stopped under an overpass while bolts of lightning were all around us..and I believe that Sanjoh has pics of this. We had a convertible BMW between us who had the top down in all this....

Quick note here; John will hopefully chime in on this thread with his POV on our trip..

Somehow we managed to make it to Fluxcapacitor's digs in North GA at an ungodly hour of the early AM on the 28th....
Flux dude your rock!!!

Somehow this story will continue.......

Yes it will continue!

It all started inoccently enough. Over an early morning beer in the Everglades, someone mentioned the TAT.

It was the first time I met rider1150gsadv.

This was to be my first long ride! Everything was in top shape ready to hit the road as soon as the front brake pads were replaced.

Ol Murphy reared his head and said whoa. The PO had stripped the allen head on the pin that holds the brake pads in. Vice grips, a few choice words, wd40, nothing was budging that thing.

Oscar junps in and the pads are done!

Ready

I brought too much chit

Well it was 3 AM when we met up with Fluxcapacitor and his pets . Honestly I don't know if I had stayed up that late for some inmates to show up...
We did ride 600 miles that day/night however.
Beds were waiting and the next AM we had coffee and met up with Flux's better half....
Really great to meet people like them!!

Flux's garage

We said our goodbye's and left for Jellico TN, the start of the TAT...
First stop was the area where the Olympic Whitewater canoeing was done right at the TN/GA border. What a great place that was!!

Bike parking for lunch....

Parking at the rafting scene...

After this little interlude we ended up in Jellico TN for the night where we were treated to another rain storm....

John and rain.....

Room 'explosion'... Although not the worst one of the trip.....

Next installment a little later....

Talking

Thanks guys!!

Well lets see here so the pannier was fixified for now , we had a bike sharing a room , and met cool folks on the way .

July the 3rd was a dusty day of 217 miles in AR. On the way we met a really cool guy named Owen. He has a workshop with huge equipment and is willing to lend a hand if any more TAT riders stop by. He can weld.... . Owen may actually have a sign up by now too.
Now I forgot where exactly he is located, but believe me you can't miss the barn, as it is genormous. John has pics I am sure.....

We met many locals who were all wondering why the bikes they saw, were only going one way. We explained the TAT to them and now they understand and will keep an eye out too..Again, lots of friendly folks out there too.

We stopped for lunch at a neat bridge.
John checking it out.

The "local"

In the PM we did a watercrossing to wash of the dust....

John going thru 'deep' water....

And I also let my bike rest in it's natural position after the rear tire slipped of a rock....
That by the way was a steep piece of road and it doesn't show well here.
It was a precursor of what was to come the next day.....

This was the second and also the last time I dropped it while riding the rest of the trip. Might as well get that part over with sooner than later right??... After all we had no idea what would be in store for us the following day..... .

Stay tuned.....

Thumb July 10

Awoke with a temp of 48F
Today ended up being a short but beautiful ride into Salida by way of Cotopaxi..

Along the road.

One of many cattle guards..

Many old homesteads around

The rockies are getting closer..

And closer...

As we were done riding at 11 AM, I decided to get a new rear tire in CO Springs as the trail ahead was going to be tough. We could not ride Tomichi and Hancock Passes as they were snowed in. So off I went from Salida to CO Springs and back, just a 200 mile round trip that went fast and uneventful. I replaced the tire at the motel in Salida. Just 300 miles for the day incl the tire trip..
The new tire proved to be a blessing the next day.....

Talking July 7th

Left Salida at 8:30 AM and headed for Lake City. This was another great day weatherwise and the scenery as usual in CO is somewhat overwhelming in a good way ...
First I had to look at this different mode of transportation as this vehicle had shown up the previous night....

A fully restored '57 Chevy. The proud owners had it restored over a number of years and had owned the car for 30 years...

Anyway back on the trail toward Marshall Pass..

Near Cathedral..

Plenty of run-off from the massive snow this past winter.

After Lake City, I split off from the group and decided to ride to Silverton over
Cinnamon and California Passes... There still was a lot of snow and the roads were very rough....

The road ahead..

I just parked the bike against the snow/ice mass and had some fun...

Cinnamon Pass...

Toward California Pass..

Selfportrait..

Mining is visible all over the area....

Going to California Pass....

It gets a bit tricky as the road is very rough..

That zig-zag line is the way to the top...

The top...

Alpine lake near the top.. It was spectacularly blue and probably barely above freezing...

Silverton

I didn't do Corkscrew as the weather was threatening and I didn't feel like being up there by myself as it was time for a B'day celebration with a stogie and an adult beverage ...
I rode to Ouray and stayed at the Matterhorn Hotel for some R&R in the hottub...

To be Cont'd....

Nice pictures, good ride.

This one looks like the Ocoee River, just west of Ducktown?
