Lake Erie North shore or South shore?
I plan to be at Toledo for a weeks vacation in a couple weeks, so if there is time should I ride the North shore or South shore of Lake Erie? Which has the least traffic and best camping? I don't care about the type of road surface just the food and views. How long would it take to circle the whole thing and any problems crossing the Canada border? Any suggestions. Thanks JED

I've never really been on the north shore of Lake Erie, so I can't speak to that. According to Google Maps it's about 635 miles all the way around; a little longer if you were to hit Niagara Falls, instead of just crossing in Buffalo.
Also, don't forget your passport for crossing the Canada/U.S. border. It's been required since June 1. Here's a little site that has some information and points of interest for Ohio's section of Lake Erie shoreline. It might be helpful....it might not. http://www.circle-erie.com/ |

Do the island tour. Take the ferry over to Put-in-Bay and ride the northernmost Florida Key.
Lake Erie is quite scenic along the Ohio coast and really nice towards Erie. Towards Buffalo, there are some nice parks. Large vineyards to the waterfront. There has been some massive reconstruction along the waterfront throughout the midwest over the past 10 years. Most of the industrial machine has dissappeared. There may still be the odd steal mill operating, but that adds to the charm of the history of the lake.

I got off the interstate and road into downtown Cleveland last summer just because I had never been there and was plesantly surprised. The downtown area is very nice, theres lots to do and just down the pike a few exits is Cuyahoga National Park. There is good riding through the park all the way to Akron. What little I have seen on the north side of the lake was in the Point Pelee National Park. Nice park but the rest of the area is kinda farmy.

I'm in Toledo and I could show you what few good roads are around here.I'd reccommend going towards Mansfield/Mohican area or north to the Irish Hills area of Mich.Depending on when you're here,Mid Ohio vintage days will be going on,or the superbike races.PM me if you want to find out more.Mike
