Michelin "Desert Racing" tires

Has anybody experience with Michelin "Desert Racing" tires? On a 950?

140/80 R18

Winner of every major rally in the world, from Paris-Dakar to the Nevada Rally

I had a set on my SE but I switched them for the Metzeler Enduro Sahara III. The Deserts were great offroad, but I found them useless onroad, and particularly frightening on wet tarmac. As I also use my bike for commuting, the Sahara are much better for my heart-rate and still pretty good offroad.

I'm having good luck with my Dunlop 908 RR on the rear. I have 2,300 miles of mixed road and trail riding, and still have at least 700 - 1,000 miles worth of tread left. Nice to see other, right-sized options, as well.

Does anybody know the difference between "Michelin Desert" and "Michelin Desert Race"? Are the "Desert"-variant just the successor or what?

I don't know, but I would also like to know the difference! Or about somebody who has tried it on an LC8..

I've read that the Desert Race version (this would be the newer) is designed for 450 ccm bikes (current Dakar bikes).. And I've heard that the "old" Desert is not made anymore:( - which is quite a disappointment for me, as it used to be my favourite tire..

typically a lot of the high end "race" tires for the big rallies are one off race tires that are a radial construction. most of your off road product tires are bias-ply tires.

my guess is that the "race" version is a radial, or at least a construction closer to that..

So you mean it could be that it's the same pattern, only a firmer inner construction?

actually a radial typically is softer construction, but when racing they also use a mousse insert which feels about like 8psi, but no problems with flats so the more flexible carcass will conform to the terrain better (more traction) but with no chance of flats.

also it's usually more expensive but racers don't care. well, at that level anyway. ;)

burned up the rear on my SE pretty dang fast... the front truly is terrifying on the highway... but awesome on dirt.... going to try TKC's when my mich enduro's are done..

Run the Michelin Desert Race in the front and I have to agree highway travel gives a new meaning to terror. I run D908 in rear. I love this combo for dirt best I have had for 50/50 I'm ready to try something else highway travel is just too sketchy.

Resurrecting a old one here...

Any fresh intel on the newer Desert Race rear tire? Trying to decide on another 908 or ?? Have 1500 easy dual sport miles on my Desert Race front and it looks great.

Of course, the bigger the bike the harder it will be on rears. Since the rear is going quickly anyway, I've given up on high mileage and have raised the importance of cost in my selection of tires. The T63 is a real bargain but the largest rear you can get is 130/80 and that is too small on a 690 or larger. I think the next best bargain is the Pirelli Scorp. Rally and both front and back work well on my 690 and I just bought a set to try on my 1190R.

I have always used Michelin Deserts on my race bikes, but have also used both the T63 and Dunlop 908RR over the years too... (on my XR650R).

I'd say the 908RR rear is a great dual-sport (ie. road and trail use) tyre, having ridden one from the UK to Morocco and back as far as Northern Spain before it was worn out.

I've also used T63s (front and rear) on the XR, and found they were pretty useless by about 1000 miles - I wouldn't recommend them on a big heavy/powerful bike - the Deserts will really last twice as long...

However, if you are on a budget - as a previous poster suggested, the T63 rear is similar to the Michelin Desert rear... while I'd add that the Michelin AC10 front is a very similar tread pattern to the Desert front - all are DoT street legal tyres.
