Talking Grossglockner High Alpine Street .. Austria

A day off. I had to work on the weekend, so i got free days this week. Living 39
years in Bavaria, so i have been a few hundred times in Austria but never have
been to the famous "Grossglockner" and the "Hochalpenstrasse" going through
this wonderful Landscape. So i decided to spent a day and 18.- EUR. Yes, it's
18.- EUR to use the road. Till today i was not sure if this could be worth it.

Now i got my Sticker. In other words, i've been there, rode the street 2 times
and i would do it again.

Starting yesterday morning at 0800h and it was foggy on my way to the alps.

but after a few kilometers, when reaching Bayrischzell, it clears up and i was
sure, this will be a fine, sunny day.

long story short ... rode through the "Wilder Kaiser" Region (Wild Emperor) to
the Toll Boothes of the Grossglockner, paid my 18.- EUR (second ride in the
same year for 4.- EUR) and started to see the Grossglockner and the dead
end at "Franz-Josef-Haus".

note the ADV Patch on the Sleeve ... ;) ok .. thank you.

...

Laugh

High Alpine Street .. whats that about? Just a road over a mountain?

Yes. But to ride from the Tollbooth (where i payed my 18.- EUR) to
Franz-Josef-Haus and to the exit in "Heiligenblut" (something like
Holy Blood) and then back to the start, is 100 km of winding roads,
hairpins, great scenery and pure fun.

ok, less cars would be more fun. i have no idea what kind
of traffic jam there will be on a sunny sunday afternoon.

.....

Wicked ok, i'm boring you .. i don't care...

you can see two small lakes where the road goes. now follow the road and you
can see a small dark spot on the picture. a real tiny black hole .. (not this kind
of, dude). this is a tunnel (fuschertoerl) and not the end of the street. when
passing the tunnel u are getting to the south side of the grossglockner street
and to the franz-josef-haus.

on the southside more wonderful winding roads and you can go to the mentioned
franz-josef-haus with the glacier (or whats left of it)

Talking where am i and which altitude?

as i reached the exit point at Heiligenblut, i decided not to go to another pass
near grossglockner, it wanted to ride it again. the ticket allows riding untill last
in at 18:00h and spending 18,- EUR for oneway is stupid.

of course bought a souvenir at the "bikers nest". a sticker saying "CAUTION
MARMOTS Grossglockner 3798 m" (12460 feet).

This is the gps showing at the resting area "bikers nest" (8448 feet)

and after a day of riding i headed home ...

odometer check when arriving in munich

the end... ;)

Looks different with cows and no snow, thanks for the photos. I don't remember a toll both on the north side but I wouldn't have stopped since I paid at the south side.
