Hey guys, I have a 1980 Suzuki GS 250t (not exactly the most adventurous machine) that I've been trying to nurse back to life for the past few months, and have encountered a problem that I've probably considered too long, and am likely over-thinking. After getting the carbs all cleaned up (many...many times) and the rust removed from the tank (reason for numerous carb cleanings), I was able to get it to fire, idle, and after a float height adjustment (a little rich at 22mm), rev beautifully in neutral. However, once in gear, it produces very little torque on take off, will nearly stall, and eventually pick up around 4-5k, and run fine up to the top end of 3rd, where it peaks around 8k, and will not pull through 4th at all. The stock air filter is lost somewhere in the graveyard of abandoned motorcycle parts, and the box is currently packed with filter material, I don't know if this is allowing air to move too freely, and causing my problem, or if its an entirely separate issue. If anyone has any idea's, thoughts, or "Hey, moron, do this's" I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'd say definitely open the airway for a try and follow up with a good filter. If you haven't, make sure there's no rat's next tucked in a corner or the outlet of the airbox anywhere.
If it's not that all I can think is a jetting issue maybe? I don't know much but I do know that most jets overlap eachother in the throttle ranges in which they're used. I'd say one of them (can't remember which might be the right one) is finally worn out or something. Here's a pic to give you a general idea, however it may not be what you need at all.

Personally, I'd fix this before trying to troubleshoot any further. You could spend all kinds of time (and $$$) trying other things, only to find that in the end it just needed to breathe properly.

Why not just buy a new air filter (the correct one)? Then, you'll know that issue is squared away. If you can't find it locally, places like Bike Bandit still carry the right part. However, your description of the bike bogging down, then starting to run better as the engine gains speed sounds like a jetting issue. I had an '83 GS500 that did the same thing when left sitting for awhile (back before I was confident in my abilities to pull a bank of carbs). You say the carbs have been gone through over and over, but have the jets actually been removed and either properly cleaned or replaced? It's very easy to go through the carbs and overlook or miss completely getting a jet clean and that's all it takes to mess you up.
