Eek hard wired SAE connector question

So, I put the SAE connection from my new battery tender Jr. On my 800gs. It has a 7.5amp in line fuse.

My question is:

I would like to run a few different things during different situations off that SAE plug. My cell phone (ANDROID with mini usb) and gps (zumo 550). Will that 7.5amp fuse surfice running either one of those? Or is it too much, and cause damage before it blows.

I am an electrical retard.

The Zumo 550 is rated at 2.5 watts max, or about 200 miliamps draw at 12 VDC. (Two tenths of an amp) The phone is probably similar. I doubt you'd pull more than one amp total with both devices together.

As long at you don't try to run a highly resistive load, like a heated jacket liner, a 7.5 amp fuse is more than sufficient for your needs. Remember: a fuse is only to protect the wiring in the event of a short or overload. A device won't draw any more amperage than it needs to operate.

I have the SAE connector for the battery tender hooked up to another SAE connector that runs forward to power the 12 socket on the handlebars. Best of both worlds, when you need the SAE for the tire pump or charger, just unplug the splice.

I have this set up on 3 bikes and had it set up that way on two 4-wheelers.

Nice, I have a little compressor that runs off a 12v cig lighter. I will look into finding a female cig lighter to SAE. To carry in bag for compressor can I buy this or do I have to make it?

I bought a cig lighter socket and another SAE plug set. Wired together, covered wires with electrical tape and it works fine. I doubt you'd (easily) find one premade, but it is simple construction. Only two wires to connect and color coded!

One thing to consider is that in the unlikely event you do manage to short out the relatively thin wires that feed these devices, those wires will melt down before the 7.5 amp fuse burns out.

Myself, I wouldn't worry about it, but if you care you could pull the 7.5 amp fuse and put in a much smaller one (1 amp would probably do).

Just go to your local auto parts store for all these pieces on the cheap. I use 12 or even ten gauge wire to set things up. Let the fuse be the weak point, not the wiring.

I have a simple connector, SAE in USB out. Plugs right in to your battery tender connector. It's the size of a flash drive and take 2 seconds to install. No splicing, no wiring to install!

Go to: americancrossroaders@yahoo.com for more information.

FYI - the little white cube charger for an iPhone can deliver 1 amp at 5 volts (5 watts). The iPad version is good for 2 amps at 5 volts (10 watts). When the batteries are low, they pull as much current as they can get to charge quickly. By extension, I'd guess your Android phone would pull 5 watts. If you assume a 12volt feed to the USB charger and throw in an efficiency factor, that 5 watts should draw about 0.5 amps from your bike. Your big 7.5 amp fuse should be OK.
