She slapped me with little provocation !

I have been having this love affair since 1989.

It started out at that time as a kayak trip off of Isla Espiritu Santo for 10 days, and then progressed to exploring the south cape region for several weeks by hitch-hiking, camping, and budget hotelling. My sister had been guiding kayak tours out of Loreto for the previous 10 years and had invited me to do an exploratory trip....an invitation I had been secretly coveting for several years before she extended the invite.

I was smitten: the allure of desert, ocean, a different culture, and fish tacos had invaded my heart.

And as many of us know, once you have a taste of such an exotic romance, you just want more of its breath-taking embrace. And, one must also treat such an affair with consideration, respect, and forethought.

My affair is with Baja, a unique part of Mexico that offers limitless riding challenges and opportunities. My first motorcycle ride there was in 1995 on a 1981 R80 GS…a month of riding in all sorts of terrain…except in the deep sand...
(a type of riding I hate to this day).

My next few rides to Baja were on my ‘96 1100GS in 2000 and 2002.

WAY overloaded...

Those rides convinced me that I needed a lighter bike more suitable for off-road riding. So, it was in 2000 that I bought my first dirt bike…a sweet used Husqvarna 350...

The Husky never experienced the pleasures of Baja, but my ’04 450 EXC did on several occasions...

I sold my R80 in late 2010 and invested the funds in a 2009 690 R KTM that I had been eying for several months. I knew I wanted an “in-between bike “ for the stable, I like my 450 EXC, and no other brand presented as an attractive option….so I bought the 690 the week after my 2010 ride to Baja.

I found the mega-690 thread on ADV Rider and sorted out some mods that were generally recommended.

The plan this year was to join some of my local Kamloops compadres for 10 days of riding in February. These guys are hard-core single-trackers and have been also going to Baja over the past 8 years or so. Several of these guys have raced and finished the Baja 1000 over the years and generally have a good sense of how to do Baja....

They are into their second converted school bus, "Big Blue":

The die was cast....momentum was building....and I was once again off for a tryst with my desert affair...

G,
The rear section of the bus is a compartment that can hold 8 bikes...and the bus has seven bunks, a toilet, a kitchen, and always somebody at the wheel....it's a 26-hour drive straight through from BC to San Diego....so guys can eat, sleep, drink beer, and fart between driving shifts.

I think ADVfool and I may have seen you guys at the Pemex in El Rosario last month. A group of guys, one KTM needed to be towed to start? This group was just finishing off lunch/dinner from Mama Espinoza's. You Guys? If not, I'll still enjoy the post. BTW, I'm with you in that 'love affair with Baja'

As Ken Kesey said: "You are either on the bus or off the bus!"
.... but he ate a lot of acid...

Ross sent these pics of the bus before it was infested with beer and wine-swilling dirtbikers intent on farting their way through three countries to simply ride the best Baja has to offer:

The rear living area has five bunks and a biffy...the only slide-outs are guys pulling duffles out from under bunks or off of guys sleeping under a pile of someone's stuff:

The RV biffy works simply....ever try to hit the bowl while standing and when the driver is drifting corners? ....or not have the bowl contents slopping into your pants around your ankles while on the throne and the driver hits the brakes???? Something for the unitiated to ponder

The kitchen is plumbed to a 50 gallon water tank on the roof of the bus, as is the RV toilet (for water supply....no hot water at this time). The bus has an inverter so the fridge and microwave can run off of engine or land-power. Drinking water is from 5 gallon jug....beer is in the fridge....keep your eye on your beer...seems that others get a taste for it too

As we move forward in the coach, there is a table, adjoining seats, and a "couch" (i.e. bunk set-up that has the top bunk dropped down for a backrest) for a socializing area , where stimulating conversations may be heard wafting over the gentle pulse of the diesel pusher , the sweet melodies of singing , the clinking of glasses, the lofty words of elder riders "That Honda is the best bike I ever had !!".... "That 300 is the best bike I ever had !!!!" , where friends can share a conversation , , and where a meal might be shared ,

And the bikes are stored in a separate section at the rear of the bus...the ramp has a winch:

But I digress...there is riding and travel to talk about...

Bathroom on the bus

I take a trip every spring , with some buds , in a motorhome . Where there is much beer swilling , card playing , and hooting , going on !

We tape a couch pillow on the wall over the pisser - lean your forehead into it and you have a great 3 point stance ! Cuz , even if the driver is doin his best ......... its rough back there .

The pillow works . Oh , and by the way , we all share cleanup duty :))

This is a great thread . Thank you so much for doing this .

You guys are livin large !

KenBob,
First of all....Pure Prairie League rules.... I first turned on to them in the very early 70's: their first album was their best I think !!!

As for the biffy stabilization technology...no cushions were used but I did figure out some tripod configurations to reduce misdirects

WFO,
Next year the bus is likely headed down to San Felipe (it's usual base at Kiki's... http://www.kiki.com.mx/ ) in late January or February...usually the core group who are the bus partners have 3-4 places available...fee is charged to cover fuel...loading up happens in Kamloops or somewhere along I-5..
