Almost posted in Equipment section, but my questions are more Thumper (and 640 Adv) specific. I'm gonna get some hard cases, 'cause I need 'em for some upcoming trips. I've narrowed it down to two brands, and three possibilities: 1. Two 35L Zega cases (KTM Hardparts version) & brackets 2. Two "Baja" 26L Moto-Sport cases & brackets 3. Two "Bavarian" 37L Moto-Sport cases & brackets. My desire is to have decent volume with minimal width. Both manufacturers appear to make beautiful cases, and the prices are fairly comparable with a slight value nod going to Moto-Sport. I like the streamlined look of the Baja cases, but fear they might be a tad small for practicality. If anyone has experience with any of these three choices for a KTM 640 Adventure, I'd sure lik eto hear about what you like and dislike. Also, I would love to know the exact width (measured while mounted on the bike) of these three systems. I can't find any info anywhere about this. It's hard to judge from the pics on various sites about the bracket's widths. I wonder if the Moto-Sport Bavarians might actually be slimmer than the Zegas when mounted, since I have read about people complaining that the Zega mounting system is wider than it needs to be on the exhaust side of the bike. Thanks in advance for any help and info!
No experience, just a quick check of the Munn price of $788 for the KTM stuff vs the Moto-Sport Baja cases & brackets for $885. The Zegas are bigger but unlined, the Bajas... just the opposite. Streamlined appearance doesn't mean much to me... I'd do the KTM bags and do my own liners, or the 37L H&Bs Andrew sells for $869. Decisions, decisions... :huh
i'll get you the exact width of the zegas when i get home. on the road right now. i did take pics before and make the measurements for someone else, but i forgot to upload to smugmug... doh! btw.... i love my ktm zegas
If you end up going for the Zega's, I would order two of the 35l's, rather then get the 35/41l combo. The 41 is only 1.5 inches wider, but it seems like a lot more then that.
Creeper, Thanks for the pricing info from Munn's! I didn't check there, I just looked at the TT site for a ballpark figure, and it seemed like the Zegas cost more. Loaded, Thanks for checking into that for me when you have a moment... Beautiful picture! The bike and the cases look sweet. Mack, I agree. I saw someone up at the LC4 Tech Daze had that setup with the 41L on the right side, and it looked way too wide for my taste. Definitely going to get two 35L if I go this route... which it looks like I'm leaning towards with the new pricing info.
Gi'day Anthony, I'm on the same quest but I have the TT (Zega) bracket already. The Moto-Sports are nice with insert an all but $$ and I'd F around fitting the TT mounts etc. Looked at the pelican option price is great but really prefer top loading. Found these http://www.klr650.com/alTourBox.htm which are cheap <$300/ pair including shipping but don't know anything about them (quality, finish etc). At the end of the day the Zega's will be my the best function/quality fit for me. Local dealer does a pair for $598, Munns $542 plus shipping (guessing that works out to be about the same price). I'm still looking for cheaper options but time is running out on me. Need them for Baja trip in 3 weeks (YeeHaaa) so I'll have to "pony up" the cash soon. Anyone out there want to sell me a pair of Zegas? Cheap! Cheers
BTW, I've got te same complaint for my Zega mount, especialy with the SuperTrapp fitted in tight like I have. It could be made to be about the same distance out as the right side (non pipe). I've got grand plans to have it cut and shortened etc but just not anytime soon...
I personally like the narrow profile of the Bajas. I don't have any first-hand experience to offer, but I do have this nice pic of the bike I almost bought a couple weeks ago:
You didnt mention these but since I wanst sure if you looked at them... They come in three sizes and three widths for each size They go as narrow as 7.5inches (probably what I will get) An optional "canyon cut" is also available, which I think is good if you are planning on falling down Priced at 660 50 more for the canyon cut and 90 for your choice of powdercoat
I had looked at them a while back. Its a good price @ $358 for the basic boxes. Nice to options of smaller and lager sizes with or without bevel cut. Coating are a good idea if you don't have inner badges, gets very black inside with the bouncing around. But at the end of the day it works out like this for me Pair Teton 9x15x18 $382 (inc ship) Zega Mounting system $130 (inc ship) $512 I'll have to measure and drill 36 holes (in the right places ) for the mounting system. I help a mate fit his new Zegas on his GSA. I was very impressed (and intimidated) by how accurately the mounting system fitted in the mounting bracket. I was tight enough that you had to push to pop it in and very firm once in. That seams like a really good thing on the back of a D/S Bike. A mm (.04" for the internationally challenged) eitherway and it would not be as good. OR I get the Zega's at an additional $86 ($598) and the mounting is all done and has a guarantee. That's how it works in my deranged world
Surly, Thanks for mentining that option. I had seen those along the line, but was resisting because most people seemed to go with the Zegas. After reading Rob's most recent post, I have to say I think I am 99% sold on the Zegas. One last question: Are the Zegas powder coated on the interior, or otherwise coated? Thank you to all who have answered and given opinions, insights and info. You guys (and this place) kick ass.
Rob, How are ya? Thanks for your valuable insights. I appreciate your taking the time to relate your experience and first hand observations. Oh, and I hate you for being able to go to Baja in a few weeks! I wish I could do a trip like that, but my schedule, which is actually free right now, gets jammed starting March 7th. Ah well... that's fate I guess. Maybe next time... Have a great time ya bastadge! BTW... do ya ever check yer PM's?
No... but you can buy liners, make your own (peel-n-stick carpet squares work nice, as does neoprene wetsuit material), or have the insides powdercoated locally... in the snazzy color of your choice.
you already have a rack? HT sells racks for the bags and they will mount them in a nuetral position fer ya. so it would be aboot 700 for a setup like the Zegas but....if the Zegas are under 8 that seems like a pretty decent deal if you prefer TT over HT
Did you get a PM from me? I tried sending you one to ask you to post in a thread about tha '99 640 that Craigincali just bought. I was trying to get you to talk up the lovely color scheme to get Craig fired up about buying it. That's all... no biggie, but if you didn't get it, that's a drag! I guess that explains why all the women of AdvRider never respond to my PM's to them
Nope... No PM from you. Anyway I've done it, without your prompting Hey Dude, forget the women I'll respond to ya Cheers
I had my Zegas sprayed inside by the local Line-X outfit. It's quite a bit heavier than the closed cell foam padding I used previous to that, but much more durable and much thinner. No more black powder or black stains on things, and no more rattling and clanging of items inside against the boxes. I think they charged me 20 bucks per side.
