2012 Dakar full already!

Less than three months after enrollment opened, the bike category for the Dakar is already full, with an even broader and balanced range of nationalities for the 2012 edition, which will start on 1st January in Mar del Plata and finish on 15th January in Lima.

The dunes of the Atacama or the Argentinean canyons which have graced TV screens during each month of January for the last three years are attracting more and more adventurers from the four corners of the earth. In the space of several weeks, 310 enrollment applications for bikes and quads have been received by the Dakar organising teams, who have decided to restrict the category to 220 vehicles for reasons of safety and comfort.

Such an influx of applications had not been seen since the last African editions of the rally. In addition to the impressive overall figures, analysis of the applications also reveals a broad range of profiles and nationalities. The South Americans who are still discovering the Dakar will once again be present and will be accompanied by more French, Italian, American and Australian competitors.

The organisers will now put in place a selection process, focusing first and foremost on the sporting accomplishments of the riders, whilst including a share of experienced riders who boast the necessary technical and physical qualities to succeed in the challenge of their first Dakar.

I thought that at the Dakar workshop we went to they said that the official list would be out much earlier this year in recognition of the number of overseas entries and the fact that they were expecting many entry applications to be turned away. I seem to remember Chris saying it would be around September.

Many 'rejects' seem to be solo riders, running selfsupported with a create...

Sign up with a team seems to increase the chance of a starting spot...

Rob van Pelt (8x times on a bike) didnt make it either, I think this is due to the limited amount of 'self supporting' spots...no?

Getting the mail that you're in from ASO and the ASO publishing the list of competitors in fall is two different things, is it not?

You have to send in the funds in May anyway and should get your letter around now. The List is for the journos and pundits later on.

If you want to know about who's in and who's not, you're checking ADV anyway.

That is correct, unless that has changed too. The accepted entrants got a letter well before the list was published to help them with logistics. IIRC, Jenny posted her letter in her thread last year if you want to try and find it. I would assume since some of the folks know they were not accepted, that some type of notification has been put out already.

When I did it, (may have changed) I had received a confirmation letter on June 13.

Yes letter of acceptance comes about now

Official entry list is published in November once the factory boys are sorted. Their entries dont close till start of Nov so for sure no published list will come out before then.

It appears that the rejected entry applications are being notified first this year

I am totally stunned that Rob van Pelt got knocked back, he usually is the top Malle Moto runner and often in top 20 finishers

well if there are limited spaces for moto competitors, riders bringing assistance crew and assistance cars = more euro to ASO than a malle moto rider.................so yup there's the selection criteria right there I'd say. Certainly cant be experience or skill based on van Pelt's rejection.

Anyone know if Kemal Merkit entered again and if he got accepted ??

Question Another "now" vs. "then" reflection...

A synic might be forgiven for thinking there was something to your theory SafariBerg...

Once upon a time (in Africa) the (TSO/ASO) calculation went something along these lines;

"All riders private or factory accepted on this grand adventure... (but we 'ope that no too many make past day 7... as we 'ave not packed enough jambon et fromage sandwiches...")

Today is a new day... and a new calculation apparently... With the media/corporate glory and economics that the event now enjoys in Sth America... the (read between the lines) message is;

Welcome to the DAKAR rallye... where the spirit of competition and the ideals of the privateer are still alive and well... (please bring all your motorhomes, team busses and as many service personal as you wish...)

Apparently 320 moto entries were received for only 200 start places, so around 120 entries have been rejected.

11 Australian entries were nominated and 2 have been rejected by ASO, so maybe 8 or so Aussies on the start line come January 2012

20 moto start spots have been reserved for factory nominated riders..................................so that will make around 220 moto starters, back to the size of the field in 2009

Okay then... so the volunteers that did not get a spot in the firing squad, have recieved their letters of "sorry you did not make the cut.." sometime about now... And those that are accepted recieve notification of same...

And the "official" list (with all the hollywood names") is published in November...

So... who do we know is "in" (inmates, clued up insiders etc.?) Unofficially... of course!

I don't think it would be panning out like it does these days if Sabine was still around.. The original essence of the Dakar is slowly getting lost. Its the privateers that make the rally.
