81 R100 Timing Mark

Does anyone out there have a photo of the timing marks for an 81 R100RT. I look in the timing hole and only see the teeth on the clutch carrier/flywheel. Is the mark stamped or painted on the wheel or is there some kind of tab attached the flywheel with the "Z" and "S" marks? The bike runs but I have no idea what the timing is set at.

There are little tabs that stick out behind and below the starter teeth.

A lot of beemers are timed retarded because the person setting the timing doesn't get down low enough beside the bike so that his eye doesn't only line up the marks on the flywheel and case but also the center of the flywheel.

Here is the OT mark looking at my 81 R100. The Z mark is the same just appears before the OT mark when rotating the engine. Like SS said they are on tabs. Look carefully or you will miss them when rotating the engine by turning the rear wheel with the tranny in 4th or 5th gear.

turning engine over

I have had better luck turning my engine over via the hex screw on the alternator behind the front cover. Make sure you remove the spark plugs. Very easy to rotate then.

I find that method allows better control and quicker success, and if the front is off then it's a no brainer. Using a kickstarter is another way.

To the OP, flip the rubber stopper off, plugs out, turn the engine slowly and watch for the markings. Too easy. 5 minute surveillence, then you'll know.
